HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 1975-028 RESOLUTION NO. 75-28 WHEREAS, the United States Senate has presently under consideration a bill commonly referred to as Extension of 1965 Voting Rights Act, H.R. 6219; and WHEREAS, said bill proposes to extend the voting rights act to cover the municipalities of the State of '�� Texas , and in order to comply with said act a city government would be required to obtain prior approval � from the United States Attorney Generalrs office or from a United States District Court to annex new territory, to relocate a polling place or precii�ct boundary, to alter the residential boundaries for any elected councilman, to make any change in the method of selecting any offical, and virtually any other change involving the election or appointment of city officials; and WHEREAS, the City Council is of the opinion that there has been no evidence submitted that would warrant this intrusion by the Federal Government into the govern- mental decision making process of this City and the other cities in the State of Texas; and WHEREAS, the Council would urge all Texas Congressmen and Senators to vote against the bill in its present form. NOW, THEREFORE, ABOVE PREMISES CONSIDERED, all of which are incorporated herein. BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF �, GRAPEVINE, TEXAS: Section 1. That all United States Congressmen and �, Senators f rom the State of Texas are her eby urged to vote against the extension of the 1965 Voting Rights Act H.R. 6219 as it is presently proposed, and to seek the passage of amendments to said bill that would have the effect of removing the proposed federal control f rom the govern- mental affairs of the cities of the State of Texas. Section 2. That the City Secretary is hereby in- structed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to Congressman Jim Wright, United States Senator John Tower, and United States Senator Lloyd Bentsen.
