HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 1996-053 RESOLUTION NO. g6-53 �� A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF '"�'" GRAPEVINE, TEXAS SUPPORTING THE EFFORTS OF THE INTERSTATE HIGHWAY 35 CORRIDOR COALITION, URGING THE DESIGNATION OF THIS MAJOR CORRIDOR AS THE "NAFTA" SUPERHIGHWAY; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE WHEREAS, Interstate Highway Thirty-Five (IH-35) represents the most significant north-south thoroughfare in Texas, spanning over five hundred miles and twenty-one counties from Cooke County in the north to Webb County in the south; and WHEREAS, IH-35 represents a terrestrial river of trade directly affecting over six million Texans or approximately one-third of the State population; and WHEREAS, IH-35 represents the most important economic engine for the cities -and counties traversed by and/or contiguous to the IH-35 thoroughfare; and '"""" WHEREAS, daily traffic on IH-35 has exceeded capacity in many places along its route; and � WHEREAS, the counties, cities, chambers and councils of governments along the IH-35 corridor route should ensure that IH-35 remains the primary north-south transportation thoroughfare in Texas; and WHEREAS, IH-35 links essential multi-modal facilities such as Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, Alliance Airport, the trucking port of Laredo and significant rail cargo terminals. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GRAPEVINE, TEXAS: Section 1 . That the City of Grapevine, Texas strongly supports the efforts of the IH-35 Corridor Coalition and urges the designation of the twenty-one county route as the primary north-south NAFTA superhighway to facilitate the movement of goods and products through North America. „�� Section 2. That the City Council of the City of Grapevine, Texas, authorizes its City Manager to distribute and promote this Resolution to City, County, State and w,�. Federal officials affected by the intent of this Resolution. Section 3.
