HomeMy WebLinkAboutORD 1979-029 ORDINANCE NO. 79-29 AN ORDINANCE AMENDING THE CODE OF ORDINANCES , CITY OF GRAPEVINE , TEXAS , BY AMENDING CHAPTER 18 , ARTICLE I , SECTION 18-3 , SUBSECTION (G) , BY ADDING THE REQUIREMENT THAT MEMBERS OF THE POLICE DEPARTMENT AND FIRE DEPARTMENT TAKE BIANNUAL PHYSICALS FOR THE PURPOSE OF DETERMINING THAT SAID EMPLOYEES ARE PHYSICALLY ABLE TO CARRY OUT THE DUTIES OF A POLICEMAN AND FIREMAN; AND DECLARING AN EMERGENCY. BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GRAPEVINE , TEXAS : Section 1. That Chapter 18 , Article I , Section 18-3 , Subsection (G) of the Code of Ordinances , City of Grapevine , Texas , is amended to read as follows : "Chapter 18 , Article I , Section 18-3 (G) Special Provision for employment in public safety (police and fire) : (1) State law requires that applicants for the police department meet the following minimum standards : (a) Applicant must have a high school diploma or G.E.D. (City requires minimum of thirty (30) college credits) . (b) Applicant must be at least eighteen (18) year of age. (c) Applicant must complete one hundred forty (140) hours of police training within one year of his date of hire and receiving his commission. (d) Applicant must pass a physical examination prior to being accepted. (2) State law requires that applicants for the fire department meet the following minimum standards : (a) Applicant must complete three hundred twenty- five (325) hours of instruction at a certified training school for fire fighter certification within one year of the date of his hire and receiving his commission. (b) Applicant must pass a physical examination prior to being accepted. (3) As a condition of employment all police officers and fire fighters employed by the City of Grapevine shall take and pass a bi-annual (once every 24 months) physical by a physician designated by the City Manager for the purpose of determining that said employeecontinues to be physically able to continue his or her duties . " Section 2 . Emergency. The fact that the present ordinances of the City of Grapevine do not require members of the police department and fire department to take biannual phy- sicals , creates an urgency and an emergency and in the preserva- tion of the public health, safety and welfare requires that this ordinance shall take effect immediately from and after its passage and the publication of the caption as the law and charter in such cases provides .
