After relocation, the structure will be renovated and restored to its original use as a schoolhouse. Period furnishings such as blackboards, desks, books and tablets will be used to help recreate the late -nineteenth century schoolhouse experience. The focus will be to tell the story of education in Grapevine and how important good schools are to a community then as they are now. It will also be the first stop for students and visitors who visit the complex. After relocation, staff will begin planning for restoration and hope to be underway by year-end. A possible opening date could be as soon as May of 2008. The third component is the Cotton Ginner House, already on site. Currently used for storage, this building will also be renovated and adapted to tell the story of Grapevine's "industrial" heritage. The focus will be on some of the industries and factories that thrived in Grapevine for many years including cotton ginning, canning (during the WWII Years), basket making and feed milling. Combined, these industries accounted for most of the steady jobs available in this area for many decades and helped provide stability for many farming families. Current photographs are attached. The subject site requires variances from the Board of Zoning Adjustment at their August 6, 2007 meeting relative to: front yard setback and landscape setback for the parking area. The property is zoned "GU" Governmental Use District. Plans and building permit applications have been submitted, as well as all other submittal documents as required by Chapter 7 of the Grapevine Code of Ordinances. The Building Inspection Department will ensure that all aspects of the construction comply with adopted codes and ordinances.
