SUBJECT: ENGINEERING SERVICES — POOL ROAD RIGHT TURN LANE
RECOMMENDATION:
City Council consider approving an engineering design services contract with Teague,
Nall & Perkins, Inc. in the amount of $16,500.00 for design of a northbound right turn
lane at the intersection of Pool Road and SH26, and take any necessary action.
FUNDING:
Funds are currently available and programmed in GO Bonds, account 178-78116-010.
BACKGROUND:
TxDOT's project provides a connection to the Pool Road leg of the intersection south of
SH26 with the current three lane configuration. The south leg provides a northbound
left turn lane, a northbound through lane and a second northbound through lane
converted to a right turn lane.
Staff is proposing to convert the northbound right turn lane back to a second through
lane and add a right turn lane on the south leg of the intersection. This will double the
storage capacity for northbound through movement, shortening the queue, and reducing
the main lane backups that occasionally block access to the left turn lane.
Brumlow Road, the north leg of the intersection is ultimately a two lane roadway, but it
has sufficient width from the intersection to provide two northbound receiving lanes for a
distance of approximately 300 feet before merging. This configuration should provide
for improved northbound traffic flow through the intersection.
Teague, Nall & Perkins designed the TxDOT improvements on SH26 and have prepared
a layout of the necessary improvements to accommodate the added right turn lane and
a slight extension of the left turn lane to restore the left turn storage lost due to the
widening of SH26
The City will fund the added construction of the right turn lane and any right-of-way or
easements necessary, but it will be constructed as a change order to the existing TxDOT
contract for SH26.
Staff recommends approval.
