SUBJECT: APPROVAL FOR THE PURCHASE OF STORAGE AREA
NETWORK EQUIPMENT
RECOMMENDATION:
City Council to consider the purchase of additional Storage Area Network Hardware from
The Harding Group in the total amount of$53,400.00.
FUNDING SOURCE:
Funds are available in account 325-488860-101-10-2010 Capital Equipment/Machinery
Purchase Fund and 100-43465-101-2 General Fund/Miscellaneous Equipment
Maintenance/City Manager/Technology.
BACKGROUND:
This purchase will be made in accordance with an existing Interlocal Agreement with the
Local Government Purchasing Cooperative (Buyboard.com) as allowed by Texas Local
Government Code, Section 271.102. Bids were taken by the Cooperative and a contract
was awarded to The Harding Group under contract number 289-08. The term of this
contract is from 04/01/2008 until 10/31/2009. The Interlocal Agreement and Cooperative
Purchasing Agreement satisfy all bidding requirements under the Local Government
Code.
This request is for the purchase of two SATA Starter SAN (Storage Area Network)
equipment. This equipment is a network of storage disks that are used to store data. All
of the City's data is currently stored on the SAN along with the virtualization of most City
servers. The end of life for eight of our existing units is April 2012. This will replace four
of eight units that need to be replaced by 2012. Our current SAN is running out of room
and is slow. The new units are faster and have more storage capacity which will
increase performance on the network.
Staff recommends approval of the purchase of the SAN equipment from The Harding
Group in a total amount not to exceed $53,400.00.
