APPROVAL OF BID NUMBER 78-2001, WATER METERS
(ANNUAL CONTRACT)
City Council to consider award of an annual contract to Hughes Supply for the purchase
of water meters on an as needed basis for the Water Department. A copy of the bid
tabulation is attached for review. Purchases will be limited to the annual budget amount
approved for this item.

BACKGROUND:
Bids were taken in accordance with Local Government Code Chapter 252, Subchapter
B, Section 252.021, 252.0215, and 252.022.
This bid was advertised in the Fort Worth Star Telegram and the Grapevine Sun on
January 4, 2001 and January 11, 2001.
The purpose of this bid is to set pricing for the purchase of water meters to be ordered
by the Water Division in the water meter replacement program. The bid was sent to eight
vendors with one vendor responding. The bid is for an initial one-year period with an
option to renew for two additional one-year periods.
The specifications of this bid requires the use of Neptune water meters, which are the
only meters compatible with the hand held electronic meter readers that the City
currently uses. Currently Hughes Supply is the only known vendor capable of supplying
the Neptune brand. Bid solicitations were sent to all known water meter distributors in
order to insure that Neptune had not added additional distributors and to enhance the
competitive environment of the bid.
Staff recommends approval.
