SUBJECT: APPROVAL OF THE EMERGENCY PURCHASE AND
INSTALLATION OF CISCO SWITCHES FOR THE
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (IT) BUILDING AND THE
RESOLUTION THAT RATIFIES THE INITIAL PURCHASE
RECOMMENDATION:
City Council to consider approval of a resolution for the purchase of two Cisco Switches
for the new IT building from CDWG Inc. in the total amount of $15,390.00.
FUNDING SOURCE:
Funds are available in Lease Fund Account 325-48860-101-9 Capital Equipment
Acquisition/Machinery and Equipment
BACKGROUND:
This purchase is being made as an emergency purchase in accordance with Local
Government Code Chapter 252, Subchapter B, Section 252.022 (a) (2). This chapter of
the code allows an exemption from normal bidding procedures in situations that could
endanger the public safety of the municipality.
This is a request for Council approval to ratify Staff action for the purchase two Cisco
switches to use as backup for the network.
Information Technology currently uses two types of Cisco switches for network
connection between City Hall, the Police Department and the new Information
Technology building. In the event that one switch fails, the extra switch is used to insure
network operation. Because of the critical nature of communication between our
Citizens, City Hall and the Police and Courts building, the failure of the network could
endanger public safety. With the opening of the new IT facility the current backup
switches have been placed in service and this purchase is to replace the backup
switches.
Staff recommends approval.

RESOLUTION NO.
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
GRAPEVINE, TEXAS, MAKING FINDINGS OF CERTAIN
FACTS RELATIVE TO THE RATIFICATION OF STAFF
PURCHASE OF TWO CISCO SWITCHES FOR
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND AUTHORIZING THE
CITY MANAGER TO EXECUTE SAID CONTRACTS AND
DOCUMENTS AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE
WHEREAS, the City of Grapevine Information Technology Division requires two
Cisco switches as a backup to the current network switch system; and
WHEREAS, the inability of the network to communicate between City Hall, the
Police and Court's building and other critical divisions could endanger public safety; and
WHEREAS, the City of Grapevine considered it necessary to purchase the backup
switches to insure the integrity of communications network.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF GRAPEVINE, TEXAS:
Section 1. That all matters stated in the above preamble are true and correct and
are incorporated herein as if copied in their entirety.
Section 2. That the City Council of the City of Grapevine ratifies and authorizes
the purchase of two Cisco switches for a total amount not to exceed $15,390.00.
Section 3. That the City Manager, or his designee, is authorized to take all steps
necessary to consummate the purchase.
Section 4. That this resolution shall take effect from and after the date of its
passage.
PASSED AND APPROVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
GRAPEVINE, TEXAS on this the 17th day of May, 2005.
