SUBJECT: APPROVAL OF THE PURCHASE OF TWENTY-FIVE LED
BACKLIT SIGNS FOR THE TRAFFIC DEPARTMENT
RECOMMENDATION:
City Council to consider approval of the purchase of twenty-five LED backlit signs from
Southern Manufacturing in the total amount of $31,925.00
FUNDING SOURCE:
Funds are available in Lease Fund Account 325-42281-000-0-0007 Apparatus and
Tools
BACKGROUND:
Bids were taken in accordance with Local Government Code Chapter 252, Subchapter
B, Section 252.021 (a) and Section 252.041 (a). The bid advertisement posted in the
Fort Worth Star Telegram and the Grapevine Sun on March 17, 2005 and March 24,
2005. Staff issued bid documents to fourteen contractors. Four contractors responded to
the invitation. A bid tabulation is attached for review.
The LED backlit signs will replace existing street name signs that are mounted on top of
the signal mast arms. The current street signs have reflective sheeting that reflects light
from vehicle headlights at night. These signs have no internal illumination. The LED
signs will improve sign visibility at night through enhanced sign illumination. In addition,
the signs will reduce maintenance and energy costs. The LED signs will be installed at
five signalized locations in downtown on Main from Northwest Highway to Dallas Road
and will serve to clearly delineate the historic downtown area. This project is part of the
Guide Sign program approved by Council in January.
Southern Manufacturing submitted the lowest bid and met all of the bid requirements
and specifications. Their total for the 25 signs was $31,925.00.
Staff recommends an award to Southern Manufacturing for the purchase of 25 LED
Backlit Signs in a total not to exceed $31,925.00.
