PURCHASE USED DIESEL LOCOMOTIVE
The staff of the Grapevine Vintage Railroad recommends the purchase of this used
locomotive from Great Western Railway of Colorado, L.L.C. This engine has been
inspected and is in running condition and has an FRA issued blue card, which means it
meets all federal safety standards.
FUNDING SOURCE:
The purchase price of $18,500 would come from the Grapevine CVB/train operations
account.
BACKGROUND:
The Grapevine Vintage Railroad currently leases a diesel locomotive from Fort Worth &
Western Railroad (FWWR) for the Wednesday trip, low cost charters and short runs
during the festivals. A diesel locomotive is also called out when the steam engine is out
of service for repairs and maintenance.
FWWR's freight business has increased tremendously, resulting in numerous situations
when a diesel was not available for lease, forcing the cancellation of scheduled trips.
When we are forced to call on short notice due to mechanical problems, our departure is
delayed up to one hour and fifteen minutes while we wait on an engine. The purchase
of this diesel would eliminate these problems and improve our credibility as a viable
attraction.
The diesel will be painted to match the rest of the train and will be branded with
Grapevine to promote our City. When not in use, the engine will be placed on the siding
near Main Street to help promote the vintage train experience. The reliability and
service to customers justifies the expenditure and provides for an improved quality,
customer service based experience.
Staff recommends approval.
