STAABILIZED EARTH (MSE) WALL
City Council consider approving Change Order # 2 to the Ruth Wall Road (TIF II)
Construction Project in an amount of $ 47,347.02 to remove unsuitable material and
replace it with special backfill material for the low water crossing north of Wildwood
Lane, authorize staff to execute said change order, and take any necessary action.
FUNDING SOURCE:
Funds are currently available in Account # 173-48899-0003, TIFII / Ruth Wall
Construction.
BACKGROUND:
TIF improvements for Opryland Texas include improvements to Ruth Wall Road to serve
as the alternate entrance into the Opryland Hotel and provide improved traffic flow for
the existing residents of Grapevine. The Ruth Wall Road project scope includes the
replacement of the existing low water crossing with Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE)
Walls located above the 100 -year flood elevation for Lake Grapevine.
Excavation of the low water crossing has revealed that the subsurface soils beneath
portions of the MSE Wall are unsuitable due to their inability to support the weight of the
tallest wall sections near the low water crossing, approximately 30 feet in height. A geo-
technical study was conducted to determine what remedial measures would be required
to provide a stable foundation sub -grade. The geo-technical engineer recommended
that the existing materials be removed and replaced with crushed rock and cement
treated materials depending on the type and depth of soil encountered during removal of
the existing materials.

This over excavation of the existing material below the wall foundation and replacement
with the recommended material was not included in the original project scope of work.
The estimated quantity to be removed and replaced is approximately 2,027 cubic yards.
This will be replaced with the crushed rock or cement treated materials.
Change Order # 1 was a reduction in the contract price of $ 3,050.00.
Staff recommends approval.

The compensation agreed upon in this Change Order is for all costs the CONTRACTOR has incurred or may incur as a result of or
relating to the changes in the scope of work whether said cost are known, unknown, foreseen or unforeseen at this time, including
without limitation, any cost for delay, extended overhead, ripple or impact cost, or any other effect on changed or unchanged work as
a result of this Change Order. The compensation will be for fully complete and in-place construction and the actual quantities of
items installed or constructed will be measured and the quantities herein adjusted accordingly.
