SUBJECT: 2001 POPULATION ESTIMATE
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the City Council adopt a resolution setting the population at 44,390
as of December 31, 2001.
FUNDING SOURCE: N/A
BACKGROUND:
The estimated population as of December 31, 2000 was 42,298. Between the end of 2000
and December 31, 2001, an additional 117 single-family construction permits and five
single-family demolition permits were issued. An additional 48 multi -family units were
permitted in this time. A total of 824 multi -family units permitted in 2000 that were not
included in that estimate were included in the 2001 estimate. A single-family household
ratio of 2.88 persons per unit and a 94% occupancy ratio were applied to the net single-
family unit gain. A multi -family household ratio of 2.26 persons per unit and a 90.8%
occupancy ratio were applied to the multi -family unit gain. These calculations yielded a
population gain of 303 persons for single-family and 1,789 persons for multi -family for a
total population of 44,390.
As the attached charts indicate, Grapevine's population has grown rapidly since 1970.
Steady growth has been experienced in the 1990s with the only limiting factor being the
availability of residential land.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
GRAPEVINE, TEXAS, MAKING OFFICIAL THE FINDING
AND DETERMINATION AS TO THE POPULATION AND
NUMBER OF INHABITANTS OF AND WITHIN THE CITY OF
GRAPEVINE, TEXAS, AS OF DECEMBER 31, 2001 AND
PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE
WHEREAS, the City Council of Grapevine, Texas, has found and determined that
it will be for the benefit of said City to have a revised estimate of the population and
number of inhabitants, and that the City make an official finding thereof; and
WHEREAS, the City Council has directed that an unofficial census of the
population of the City of Grapevine be taken; and
WHEREAS, based upon the 2000 Census Report, City building records, and the
investigation and review of the City's growth by the Development Services Department, it
has been found and determined that the City of Grapevine, Texas, as of December 31,
2001 actually has within its limits a population of 44,390.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF GRAPEVINE, TEXAS:
Section 1. That the City Council has officially found and determined, and does
now find and determine, that the population of the City of Grapevine, Texas, as of the
31 st day of December 2001, is 44,390.
Section 2. That the City Secretary is hereby directed to forward a copy of this
resolution to the Texas Highway Department so that they may change the population
signs on the roads and highways entering and leaving the City of Grapevine, Texas.
Section 3. That this resolution shall become effective from and after the date of
its final passage.
PASSED AND APPROVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
GRAPEVINE, TEXAS on this the 7th day of May, 2002.
