HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem 08 - Tarrant County District Board of DirectorsITEM I 4q� MEMO TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL FROM: ROGER NELSON, CITY MANAGER L/ MEETING DATE: NOVEMBER 20, 2001 SUBJECT: TARRANT APPRAISAL DISTRICT BOARD OF DIRECTORS RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the City Council adopt a resolution casting 52 votes for Mike Davis for the Tarrant Appraisal District Board of Directors for a two year term beginning January 1, 2002. BACKGROUND: The term of service for each of the five directors of the Tarrant Appraisal District Board will expire on December 31, 2001. TAD has calculated that the City of Grapevine has 52 votes for nominating members to the Board of Directors. In accordance with the State Property Tax Code, each voting unit must vote in an open meeting and adopt a resolution voting for a nominee or nominees. Our ballot must be submitted by November 29, 2001. Mr. Mike Davis, owner of Mike Davis State Farm Insurance in Grapevine, presently serves as a member of the TAD Board of Directors and is very competent in the property appraisal process. Nominations have been received from the voting tax entities for candidates to fill these positions for a two (2) year term beginning January 1, N 2001 Enclosed is an official ballot listing the nominees. According to the State Property Tax Code, each voting unit must vote in open meeting by resolution and all votes may be cast for one candidate or they may be distributed among any number of candidates listed on the official ballot. The results of your vote should be submitted by November 29 to the Chief Appraiser on the enclosed ballot and by written resolution. There is NO provision fhr write-in candidates. The Chief Appraiser may not count votes cast for someone not listed on the official ballot. You may fax your ballot and resolution to (817) 595-6198. A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GRAPEVINE, TEXAS CASTING VOTES FOR THE ELECTION OF A CANDIDATE TO SERVE ON THE TARRANT COUNTY TAX APPRAISAL DISTRICT BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE WHEREAS, the Property Tax Code of the State of Texas requires that central tax districts be established in each County of the State; and WHEREAS, the five (5) member governing board of the district is selected by the participating governmental subdivisions located within the County; and WHEREAS, a vacancy currently exists on the board of directors of the Tarrant Appraisal District, and Section 6.03(1) of the Texas Property Tax Code states that "if a vacancy occurs on the board of directors, each taxing unit that is entitled to vote by this section may nominate, by resolution adopted by its governing body, a candidate to fill the vacancy." NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GRAPEVINE, TEXAS: Section 1. That the City of Grapevine, Tarrant County, Texas does hereby cast all of its 52 votes for Mr. Mike Davis to serve on the governing board of the appraisal district of Tarrant County. Section 2. It is hereby found and certified that Mr. Davis is currently a resident of the tax appraisal district and has been a resident for at least two (2) years. Section 3. That the City Secretary is hereby directed to forward a certified copy of said resolution to the Tarrant County Tax Appraisal District. Section 4. That this resolution shall become effective immediately from and after the date of its passage.
