SUBJECT: APPROVAL OF THE CONVERSION OF A VAN BODY TO A
DIVE TRUCK FOR THE FIRE DEPARTMENT
RECOMMENDATION:
City Council to consider approval of the purchase of services for the conversion of a
truck chassis and van body into a Fire Departrnent dive truck from Metro Fire Apparatus
Specialists, Inc. in the total amount of $204,123.15.
FUNDING SOURCE:
Funds are budgeted in 325-48910-210-08 Capital Equipment/Motor Vehicles/Fire
Department in the amount of $260,000.
BACKGROUND:
Bids were taken in accordance with Local Government Code Chapter 252, Subchapter
B, Section 252.021 (a) and Section 252.041 (a). The bid was advertised in the Fort
Worth Star Telegram on May 15, 2008 and May 22, 2008.
This purchase is for the conversion of a 2008 Freightliner MT-55 walk-in truck chassis
with a 22 foot Morgan Olson body into a dive truck for the Fire Department. The
purchase of the chassis and van body was the first step in the process of replacing the
Fire Department's current Dive Team Rescue Unit. This purchase was approved by the
Counci! on May 20, 2008. The next step in the process was to solicit bids to convert the
interior of the van body to accommodate the needs of the Dive Team and in its finished
form it will serve the Department for the next 20 years.
Invitations to bid for the conversion were sent to 19 qualified vendors. Three vendors
responded to the invitation. Fleet Services, Fire Department and Purchasing Staff
reviewed the bids to insure compliance with the required specifications.
The lowest bid received was from Metro Fire Apparatus Specialists, Inc. and met all of
the requested specifications. A copy of the bid tabulation is attached for review.
