Since public art is important to the City Council and the community, the Public Art Internal Review Committee would like to recommend a bronze sculpture for the complex. The Public Art Internal Review Committee met on July 1St to discuss the bronze sculpture for the ballfield complex. The proposed sculpture depicts a boy and girl gripping a baseball bat on their way to see who would be the first to select a teammate. A smaller boy is standing by and watching the selection process. Please see the attached "Choosing Sides" description of the artwork. Also, please see the attached map showing the proposed location of the sculpture. The Committee will present a drawing of the proposed sculpture art at the Council Workshop. Funding for the sculpture is available in the Public Art Fund. DE July 8,2008 (8:48AM) OAK GROVE BALLFIELD COMPLEX PROPOSED PUBLIC ART "CHOOSING SIDES" July 15, 2008 CHOOSING SIDES — BASEBALL PLAYGROUND RULES How sides were chosen Everyone on the playground knew who the two best players were. The two best players would be the team captains and were the ones who would actually do the choosing of players for the respective teams. However, which of these two team captains had the opportunity to select the first player on his/her team? Baseball Bat Rule First, someone would gently toss a bat vertically to one of the two team captains. Where this captain caught the bat was the starting place at his/her fist. The other captain would place his/her fist on top of the other captain's fist and each captain would alternate fist grips until one of the captains was the last one to be able to grip the bat. The last captain to grip the bat would toss the bat over his/her head and backwards. If the bat traveled at least five bat lengths from the thrower, the thrower would get his/her first choice of teammates. If the bat did not travel at least five bat lengths, the other team captain would get his/her first choice of teammates. The captains would then alternate in picking teammates for their respective teams. - " ,.,`. . -'4 j ` .., Tx ry , p .. t .Y i ... . b • ~ .u."twe #. , .s .>.v ., s .H ,...»- ,... ... ,.. • . ,. ..... . . .,:. ; P {. a t. l", .c , Y i . t ' .: 3,` ;: ( x r . `j ^ 'f/ P P ' w.
