DALLAS ROAD GRAPEVINE, TEXAS 76051 CALL TO ORDER Oath of Office for new Committee members. CITIZEN COMMENTS NEW BUSINESS Consider the minutes of the February 28, 2013 Animal Shelter Advisory Committee meetings and take any necessary action. Designate a Board member to keep the minutes of each meeting. Review of Shelter Activity (Impounds, Adoptions and Redemptions) for the first six months of 2013. Discuss current issues of the Animal Control Shelter. Discuss status for the search for new ACO Supervisor. In accordance with Texas Government Code, Chapter 551.001 et seq, Acts of the 1993 Texas Legislature, the Animal Shelter Advisory Committee Meeting Agenda was prepared and posted on this the 12th day of July, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. Ronald Hudson, Lieutenant Uniform Operations Division Grapevine Police Department STATE OF TEXAS COUNTY OF TARRANT CITY OF GRAPEVINE The Animal Shelter Advisory Committee of the City of Grapevine, Texas met in Regular Session on the 29th day of July, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. in the Training Room of the Grapevine Police Department, 307 W. Dallas Road, Grapevine, Texas 76051, with the following members present to -wit: Captain Tim Hall Chair, Grapevine Police Department Joy Mayo Member, Grapevine Citizen Debra Brantner Member, Animal Services Supervisor, Hurst Jason Steinle Member, Veterinarian constituting a quorum, with Nancy Snyder, Grapevine Citizen, absent, with the following liaison and staff members present: Roy Stewart Lt. Ron Hudson Kristina Valentine CALL TO ORDER Grapevine City Council Liaison Grapevine Police Department Grapevine Animal Control Capt. Hall called the meeting to order at 1:12 p.m. The Oath of Office was administered to new Committee member Jason Steinle and current member Debra Brantner by Chief Eddie Salame. CITIZEN COMMENTS Grapevine citizen Priscilla Davenport presented a proposal to assist Grapevine Animal Control with Facebook in an effort to increase adoptions and rescues of the animals at the shelter. Her goal is to make information easier to locate and more comprehensive. Jason Steinle asked about Grapevine Animal Shelter current procedures concerning rescue groups and about ACO current status with Petfinder.com and Facebook. ACO Kristina Valentine responded informing the committee that approved rescue groups are notified by telephone and e-mail about the available animals at the shelter. Grapevine currently use Petfinder.com and the Facebook is active. Captain Hall advised that the future direction of the Grapevine Shelter is to be a "No Kill" shelter. Debra Brantner stated rescue groups don't always get back with shelters as well as they are privately owned and operated. Brantner stated 98% of Hurst Animal Shelter contacts come from Petfinder.com. Brantner stated an issue associated with Facebook by Hurst is that animals are uploaded by unknown persons to Craigslist. Consider minutes of February 28, 2013 The board was provided a copy of the February meeting. All members read the minutes. Roy Stewart made a motion to approve the minutes, and Joy Mayo seconded. Motion prevailed by the following vote: Ayes: Hall, Mayo, Brantner & Steinle Nays: None Absent: Snyder Designate a Board Member to keep the minutes Capt. Hall reported with the retirement of ACO Supervisor Bill McClesky we have a vacancy for a member to keep the minutes. With the new ACO supervisor selected (Kristina Valentine) the duties will be given to them for the next meeting. No Action Taken Review of Shelter activity for first six months of 2013 Lt. R. Hudson reported 172 adoptions, 103 redemptions, 721 impounds for the first six months of 2013. The animal shelter has trapped 139 opossums and raccoons. Captain Hall asked about the euthanasia number. Lt. Hudson advised that our euthanasia numbers include everything for example squirrels, snakes etc.... We have euthanized 108 animals. Yearly Veterinarian Inspection has been completed. No action taken. Current issues With the promotion of Kristina Valentine to supervisor we now have a vacancy for an Animal Control Officer. Roy Stewart asked will the shelter be at full staff with the addition of the vacancy. Captain Hall indicated once the vacancy is filled we will be at full staff. 2 The remodeling plans for the shelter including the expansion of the cat room, the creation of a meet and greet room, and the expansion of the yards in the back. The plans of the expansion are still being established. Roy Stewart asked about the funding for the remodel and Capt. Hall advised that it was in the current budget. Joy Mayo asked about the status to donate the African Grey Parrot and the Prairie Dog. Lt. Hudson advised that the goal is to donate the bird for educational activities to a school. The paperwork to donate the bird has been completed and we are expecting to present it to the City Council in August. The Prairie dog will not be donated. Jason Steinle stated that there are concerns of donating the bird to an elementary school. Lt. Hudson advised it is not an elementary school. No action taken. Adjournment There being no further business to come before the committee, Capt. Hall offered a motion to adjourn the meeting at 1:57 p.m. Jason Steinle seconded the motion. The motion prevailed by the following vote: Ayes: Hall, Mayo, Brantner & Steinle Nays: None Absent: Snyder PASSED AND APPROVED BY THE ANIMAL SHELTER ADVISORY COMMITTEE OF THE CITY OF GRAPEVINE, TEXAS on this the 30th day of July, 2013.
