Call to Order The Grapevine Senior Citizens Advisory Board met at 3:31 pm on October 6, 2015 at The REC of Grapevine. The following members were present: Dick Guckel, Chairperson Tena Burrell, Co-Chairperson Dr. Alexander Graham Duff O'Dell, City Council Member Liaison Trent Kelley, Recreation Facilities Manager Eileen Hinson, Active Adult Supervisor Karen Rice, Housing Authority Paul Ernst Charles Burns Carey Miller Kay Blanding Pam Price Maryann Waddell, GRACE Those not present: NA 2. Guests: None 3. Consideration of minutes for August 4, 2015 meeting Approved 4. Citizen Requests Kay Blanding: Asked if there would be a way to list the passing of participants in the monthly Grape Affair newsletter. (Eileen)They could find a way to put the names and date of passing in remembrance of the participants. The Empowering Seniors Expo was really interesting, lots of handout and information. Carey Miller: Was at the Chamber Booth for the Empowering Seniors Expo and reported last year there were 1,800 participants and this year there were 2,300 plus participants at the Expo. 1 5. New Business a. Duff O'Dell -City council meeting, then going around to neighborhoods for National Night Out. -Starting process of early voting in replacing C. Shane Wilbanks. 4 candidates are running and all are men. Early voting at The REC will start on October 19 for 2 weeks. November 3 is actual Election Day. October 14 there will be an open forum at The REC in Events Hall B from 6:30-7:30pm. -City sold land by the mall to Kobota and Mercedes to build factories at. -The council and Mayor will elect Mayor Pro-Tem after new council member is elected. -The train depot in Grapevine is happening,but no plans yet. b. Grapevine Housing Authority-Karen Rice -Public Housing's Capital Funds 5 Year Action Plan was reviewed and established for this annual cycle. The major project requiring capital funds for the next 3 years will be replacement of the major 2"iron water lines around each housing complex. This project will take approximately 3 years and will start in the oldest communities first(Stan Place, Texas Street,N. Starnes/Brewer Streets). All new water supply lines should be accompanied with new water shut-offs and hose bibs. After a bid process, the work should start sometime in 2016. -The Public Housing independent financial audit report for 2014 was received and the auditor stated that the financials were reported in good fashion. -The Grapevine Housing Authority Board made the decision in May 2015 to request a voluntary transfer of the HCV Program back to HUD. The request was approved by HUD's Fort Worth office in August and they agreed to transfer GHA's vouchers and existing participants to the Tarrant County, Housing Assistance Department since they currently serve the Grapevine area. Our existing HCV participants will keep their vouchers and continue to be housed, so it should be a seamless process. The appropriate paperwork has been received in Washington,DC and transfer is expected effective January 1,2016. -The GHA Resident Advisory Board has the date for their fall picnic-Fri. Oct 16. The menu will be hamburgers, chicken breast and pot luck dishes. c. Maryann Waddell-GRACE -Friends and Family program: -Total clients: August 109/ September 110 -Total commodities delivered: August 94/September 91 -Volunteer hours: August 69.5 /September-still totaling -Total Matches: August 22/ September 24 -New Clients: August 2 /September 3 2 -New Commodities Clients: August 0/September 1 -New Matches(senior with volunteer): August 2/September 3 -New Volunteers: August 1 /September 5 -Partnering with Women's Division of Grapevine Chamber to visit seniors that are shut in and would like a friendly visit. Approximately once a month or every other month. -Home visits to homebound clients to update files for 2015. -Delivered groceries, shower chairs,walkers, and canes to homebound seniors and disabled as needed. -Helping seniors and disabled with financials and clothing as needed. -Grace volunteers deliver commodities monthly to those clients who sign up for this program. -New resale store in works before Christmas in Euless. d. Trent Kelley-REC -Progress at REC inside is about 95%completed. Still working on exterior. -There will be a shuffleboard court and big chess board outside on Active Adult side by Events Hall. -(Duff)Any pickleball?Not currently due to no demand and most requests are from nonresidents. -Rest of parking lot should be striped. -The REC is now a SilverSneakers facility. Currently have 85 people signed up for the pass. Looking into becoming a Silver and Fit facility as well. e. Eileen Hinson—Active Adults -Brought 42 Active Adults to the Senior Jamboree in Fort Worth, there were various activities and games outside at Camp Carter. -State Fair trips are on Thursdays October 1, 8, 15 taking two busloads each day. Cost is $3 per person. -Ping Pong Tournament on Thursday October 22. -Monthly field trips going on. -Will have the African Children's Choir return in November. -Taking a bus to the Hymn Sing. -Medical Open Enrollment with Insurance on November 5 the following week. AAA will provide assistance to enroll. -(Pam)Will pool table ever be brought over? Trent: No due to the open concept,low ceiling and spacing in the game room. f. Dick Guckel -Computer program had dropped awhile when at the SAC. Since the move to The REC, the numbers went back up. Had about 101 last semester and have added new classes. -(Trent)The total Active Adult membership at the SAC was around 500-600 participants now at The REC, it is up to 1600 participants. 3 6.
