CALL TO ORDER Chairman Curtis Ratliff called the meeting to order at 5 p.m. II. CITIZEN COMMENTS There were no citizen comments. Any person who is not scheduled on the agenda may address the Historic Preservation Commission under Citizen Comments by completing a Citizen Appearance Request form. In accordance with the Texas Open Meetings Act, the Commission is restricted in discussing or taking action during Citizen Comments. 1 15 March 2017 March 15, 2017 III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Balla Wright made the motion to accept the minutes as written from the January 18, 2017 meeting; Becky Hummer seconded the motion, which prevailed in the following vote: Ayes: All (Ratliff, Stanfield, Wright, Stinson, Franks, Jensen and Perkins) Nays: None Absent: (None) Janet Perkins made the motion to accept the minutes as written from the February 14, 2017 meeting; Melva Stanfield seconded the motion, which prevailed in the following vote: Ayes: All (Ratliff, Stanfield, Wright, Stinson, Franks, Jensen and Perkins) Nays: None Absent: (None). OLD BUSINESS Janet Perkins announced the June 1 renewal for membership dues notices had been mailed out. A $200 donation to the Foundation was made in February and there are now 199 active members. Vice Chairman Melva Stanfield reported with spring on the way attendance was up at Nash Farm with around 200 visitors per week; last Saturday had 97 visitors to the Farm. The February Candy Making Workshop was only half full, but they did receive a great deal of press coverage. The March Wood Stove Cooking Workshop will feature more historic culinary foods. Farm Manager Cody Jolliff announced the turkey coop had been completed and the hens are laying eggs. The fence, to shield the air-conditioning units from view, is up and blending in perfect to make the modem units disappear, the Farmhouse is looking nice. The five lambs are now one month old, one of the ewes has developed mastitis. Farm staff is working with April Rogers of the Parks & Rec Department on the April 8 Easter Egg Hunt to be held at the Farm. Nash Farm's First Friday event theme will be "Easter Traditions". The 2017 Spring Into Nash (SPIN) poster will be reviewed by the editorial committee this week; the Fall Round-Up! 2016 pie making event will become for the spring event an "adult and child" carpentry activity; and the five little lambs will be a onetime event for SPIN 2017. The Farm to Fork Supper scheduled for April 28 will start off as a reception around the Farmhouse with pickled vegetables served at the kitchen garden, deviled eggs at the henhouse and ham treats at the smokehouse. There will be cooking demonstrations for making grits with shrimp and Gouda cheese; attendees can have their photograph made at the Historic Barn for a take-away memory from the Farm. The supper will be 2 15March 2017 March 15, 2017 served in the meadow with a menu of Roasted Chicken, Spring Pork Loin, a Veggie Mash from the root cellar and finish up with "lots of pie. The Spring Into Nash 2017 committee will meet at the Farm on Tuesday morning, March 21 at 8 a.m. to plan for the upcoming event. Janet Perkins suggested a table at the SPIN event to sell any tickets left for the April 28 Farm to Fork Supper. Chairman Ratliff complimented the Farm to Fork poster as a good looking flyer; Frances Jensen suggested next time on the poster, we should list "Fundraiser" directly underneath the $100 cost for attendees to note the expense was to raise monies for more educational activities at the Farm. Balla Wright reported the committee for the Grapevine Heritage Foundation (GHF) scholarship had met with the Grapevine Colleyville Independent School District Education Foundation and the GHF scholarship of $1,000 had been posted for a student with career plans in Historic Preservation architecture or museum arts with the emphasis on preservation. Discussion followed as to where the funds were to come from to support this action. It was agreed all scholarship funds would be derived from private donations and endowments; and noted any grant funds were exempt and to be used only for educational projects and programs. Balla Wright and Cody Jolliff gave the update on sponsorships for Nash Farm events. Cody showed the packet he and Balla had created with Grapevine Convention & Visitors Bureau Sponsorship Manager Amy Stirman. Cody said they had agreed to approach potential sponsors one time per year and ask at that time for a One Year Sponsorship for the Farm. Paula Newman reported 25 events and 3,039 people had attended events at the Palace Arts Center (PAC). Routine maintenance was confirmed and she had researched Chairman Ratliff's concerns about the Palace Theatre's dark marquee in the early evening hours. PAC staff had reported the lighting of the marquee was manual and if no event that evening it was left dark so passersby would not think it was open. P.W. McCallum said he would explore with staff what the practice had been in the past. Paula said she would continue to investigate. Paula said the PAC has 10 upcoming concerts for all music genres from gospel to big band and eight days of dance competition. She said they are now advertising in The Wedding Spot and have already had 66 inquiries with many great leads from rehearsal dinners to other events here in town. NEW BUSINESS Sue Franks and Frances Jensen presented their PowerPoint presentation for the Speakers Bureau to market the Grapevine Heritage Foundation to different groups for membership and provided a working copy for other members present to jot down edits and other ideas. The presentation explained the history of the Foundation and gave specific examples of projects the Foundation had advocated for to be a part of saving Grapevine's heritage and architecture to current day when Grapevine's preservation is still fought for and appreciated by citizens and visitors alike as history from the Grape 3 15 March 2017 March 15, 2017 Vine Prairie. There was discussion on emphasizing volunteering throughout the presentation. Sue finished up the presentation asking for other comments and saying their presentation to Rotary may be late in the year and they are trying to get a date set to present to the AMBUCs. Chairman Ratliff introduced Delbert Dagel who has joined in with the CVB and all of its different branches to gather and enlist volunteers for all groups. Mr. Dagel said his wife brought him to this area from upstate New York, Amneris Dagel is a physician at Parkland Hospital in Dallas; and a faculty member and a full professor at UT Southwestern. Mr. Dagel said he liked Mr. McCallum's direction of"weaving" volunteerism in to the recruitment presentations by the Speakers Bureau and he would like to join and become a member of the Foundation today! LIAISON REPORTS Grapevine Convention &Visitors Bureau (CVB) Paula Newman reported the CVB Sales & Marketing team had 110 sales leads with a potential of 120,000 room nights and a potential economic impact of $56,000,000. 13 groups have been booked representing $7.4 million. Festivals & Events attended the Texas Association of Fairs and Events Annual Conference at Hyatt Hill Country. The grape crusher truck, Miss Grapevine, was on display throughout the conference at the trade show and receptions. Grapevine received 10 awards with six of those being first place awards and four for second place. The Visitors Information Center, Settlement to City and Depot welcomed over 3,800 guests and distributed over 74,000 brochures. Destination Services assisted eight groups representing 11,200 attendees with an economic impact of over $8.9 million. The Convention Center booked 20 groups representing an impact of $274,000. The Palace Arts Center booked 34 groups representing 5,500 attendees for an economic impact of$20,000. The website had 62,000 unique visitors. The Sales Team will work their 29th Annual St. Patrick's Day in New York City. TEXRaii is moving fast with demolition of the train platform after Spring Break. The McPherson Farmhouse at 901 Park Boulevard is being moved next week by H.D. Snow House Movers. The McPherson barn will be moved near the Blacksmith's area and the smokehouse to Nash Farm. Mr. McCallum shared the long-term five year plan of official Sister City missions with the board in hopes of their being able to attend and support one of the upcoming missions. Paul Ryan will have an area history inspired mural painted on the south exterior wall of Tolbert's Chili Parlor. The artist will be working during Summer Blast so visitors will be able to watch the artist as he works. 4 15 March 2017 March 15, 2017 The Embassy Suites is undergoing a $13 million renovation and Perry's Steakhouse has broken ground on a $7 million, 10,000 square feet facility. The Sweetheart Wine Trail was a success for the city and merchants on Historic Main Street. CVB staff volunteers participated in the Mardi Gras Parade in Nocona, Texas on Saturday, February 18, with the Miss Grapevine grape crusher truck. Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) GHF Liaison Janet Perkins reported on the commission's review and approval for more information to be a part of the current Certificate of Appropriateness application for a better review as properties are examined before the commission; and a limit of six cases for review per meeting was approved. Grapevine Historical Society (GHS) Joe Ann Standlee updated the group on the Society and the Ice House Museum. The museum is seeing more international visitors from Australia and South America. Texas Independence Day on Saturday, March 4, was a great success for the GHS celebrating Texas history. Joe Ann thanked all who participated and Sue Franks and the Senior Choir. She thanked Mayor Tate for his participation and said "No One does it like Bill Tate!" Joe Ann and Chairman Ratliff discussed their common members and agreed to share membership information. FINAL COMMENTS Chairman Ratliff asked all to take a look at the progress on opening West Hudgins Street to take you straight to Nash Farm. Sue Franks reminded all the Senior Choir will be presenting an Irish Melodies program at The Rec on St. Patrick's Day at 11:30 a.m. VI.
