Call to Order The Grapevine Senior Citizens Advisory Board met at 3:30 PM on August 7, 2012 at the Grapevine Senior Activities Center. The following members were present: Joetta King, Ex-officio, Housing Authority Kay Blanding Tena Burrell, Co-Chairperson Roy Stewart, City Council Member Liaison Francia Arrigan, Ex-officio, GRACE Pam Price Carey Miller Others present: Trent Kelley, Senior Activities Director Megan Atkins, Recreation Specialist: Senior Activities Center Those not present: Dick Guckel, Chairperson Vicki Yarnell, GRACE Paul Ernst 2. Welcome Guests Charles Burns 3. Consideration of minutes for June 5, 2012 meeting Approved 4. Citizen Requests Kay Blanding- There were a lot of questions answered at the presentation about the possibility of the new SAC/CAC. (Roy) Were there any negatives about the concept? -Kay-There was no negative responses. -Tena- There was a good vibe about the presentation. 5. New Business a. Joetta King-Housing Authority -Update on Admissions and Occupancy Policy Change: Equal access to Housing in HUD Program regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. This does not really relate to seniors. b. Francia Arrigan-GRACE -Have been very busy, a lot of clients coming in. -There are grants for rent assistance for those who are behind and might qualify. Have them come to GRACE and they support the Tarrant County. -Have had 90 A/C units given out; 20 people are on the waitlist, all are Grapevine residents. GRACE is working with 1St United Methodist. -There are 338 senior services being provided as $7,000 is allocated to the services. There are 87 seniors using the services. -Wondering about the transportation: How will it happen? Funding?How it will be addressed? What about others with transportation issues? (Tena mentioned to Francia later in meeting to talk to Commissioner Gary Fickes office about the transportation.) -Saturday September 1 st GRACE is involved with GCISD, 1St United Methodist and Grapevine in the first ever"Back to School Fair"held at Grapevine High School from 9 until 12. Provide school supplies, shots, enroll them. Have all the services at one location. They are expecting about 700 up to 1000 children who are enrolled in reduced lunches,though they are expecting walk-ins as well. They are connected for this fair through the GCISD school district. They have already doubled the numbers from previous times they have offered supplies. -(Tena) Can you talk about the Senior program? -114 seniors that have been served last month in any type of request. 87 meals were delivered to seniors. There is rent assistance, finance, utility, electric and gas also everyday assistance. Connect a senior with a friend to help with any kind of assistance. (Roy)A/C is it a window system, and are there 20 waitlist A/Cs ordered? -They are window units and the 20 on waitlist have not been ordered. TXU gave a Grant for GRACE to buy the units and they are only for qualified TXU customers. (Joetta) How is 1St United Involved?—They help spread the word. (Roy) Can private donations be made for A/C? Yes talk to GRACE and let them know you want to donate the money for the A/Cs. (Charles) Are there 20 available units?No the, the 20 are on waitlist, it has been a first come first serve for those who qualify for the units. It was a slow start now they are short units to the amount of people needing them. (Tena)Any more units going to be available for rest of summer?No,used all the grant TXU provided GRACE for the A/Cs. (Roy) What is the cost per unit? $300 with a warehouse discount and not being installed. These units are for replacing existing or old units; the people who are qualified must sign a form acknowledging that. c. Carey Miller -Empowering Seniors Expo is October 5`h. Last year teamed up with Grapevine Chamber of Commerce. They will set-up in same teamwork and then have a second distribution away from Commerce. Total update will be the Tuesday prior to the event in October. There will be a bus going from the SAC. (Tena)There will be a table for senior center representatives; including programs and educational information. Provide brochures, newsletters and senior movers information for event. d. Trent Kelley- SAC -Welcome Charles Burns, he is going to represent the SAC. Is a member of SAC and volunteers around the center. -The cookout with the Mayor, Doug Evans, and Roy speaking to the seniors about the expansion for CAC/SAC bond election in November and encourage them to vote YES. It will not increase the taxes. Had good feedback, questions and comments were all positive. Will be the biggest project for the seniors also opportunity now and for the future. -FOPS trip Bobby is taking them to breakfast and a movie. Senior Dance: Saturday the 18th at the CAC from 7-9:30pm. The waitlist is 15-20 people and the cutoff is 124 people. Is a Tropical Getaway Theme and will have a Daiquiri and Pina Colada machine. There will be a best dressed couple and best Hawaiian outfit contest. The next dance there might be a registration time for residents only first then following to all non residents. -WinStar trip will be on August 30th. -August 31"the Go Go Girls are taking a trip to the North Park Mall. (Tena) Does the Palace Theater donate tickets to the center? If so how far in advance? They do at times it depends on the shows and how far in advance they provide us tickets. Sometimes it is close to the date of the show depending on the amount of tickets they have. -FOGSAC: renew membership, donate money. Projects are for SAC which go towards the computer lab,pool table, screens and many other benefits. (Joetta) How is the board selected? Ken Anderson is the contact person, it is a self-governed, self appointed and you report to the members. -Computer registration was up to 51 people. (Tena) Congratulations to Trent, Megan and Roy for the cookout today a great representation for the city. 6. The meeting adj ourned at 4:10 pm.
