SENIO ACTIVITIE TER DIRECTOR C, H:\GRAPEVINE SENIOR ADVISORY BOARD.docagenda.doc10/02/00 Cr GRAPEVINE SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY BOARD October 6, 2000 The Grapevine Senior Citizens Advisory Board met on Friday, October 6, 2000 at 2 P.M. at the Grapevine Senior Activities Center. The following Board members were present: Dr. Edith Pewitt -Chair Harlan Jewett Miriam Bahner Lloyd Latta Irvin Bowling Tricia Wood The Chair appointed Miriam to serve as secretary for this meeting when new officers would be elected. Harlan Jewett tendered his resignation due to health problems effective at the close of this meeting. Councilwoman, Clydene Johnson said that she would inform the City Council and they would appoint another Board member. The founding members of the Grapevine Senior Council were recognized. Cr Edith introduced the new board members and Dianna Stanford gave the oath of office to • • the new members. The orientation of the new members was given by Linda Gregory,Director of the Senior Activities Center. After consideration of the minutes of the last Council meeting,they were approved. A committee was appointed to plan a luncheon for the founding members of the Grapevine Senior Council. Edith, Irvin and Miriam will serve on the committee. Linda gave a report on a draft that she and Jennifer Hibbs had drawn up dealing with the transportation problem in Grapevine. There are still some legal issues to be resolved after which they will go to a workshop with City Council. It was moved, seconded and approved that they move forward with this program completing what is necessary for approval by City Council. Edith and Miriam are to write a letter to City Council showing the Board's approval of this program. NEW BUSINESS Election of Vice Chair and Secretary for the year 2000-2001 was held. fir Lloyd Latta was elected Vice Chair Miriam Bahner was elected Secretary By concenus it was decided to meet the first Friday of the month at 2 P.M. at the Grapevine Activities Center. The plans to put sidewalks on Church Street was discussed and Clydene Johnson said she would bring the plans for this project to the next meeting so we could look at them. The cost of prescriptions for seniors was discussed. There are some who must choose between food or medicine. Communications must be kept open as to what the seniors need. People who see these people such as those who deliver meals and those who are involved in outreach programs could identify the needs of these people and let social workers know what is needed. We need a list of the seniors names living in Grapevine in order to contact them to identify their needs. The idea of starting a Good Neighbor program was discussed. This would involve Cie educating younger people in ways in which they could get to know and help their senior neighbors. • The next meeting will be held November 3, 2000 at 2 P.M. at the Senior Activities Center.
