The Grapevine Senior Citizens Advisory Board met on Friday, February 4, 2005 at the Grapevine Senior Activities Center. The following board members were present: Dr. Edith Pewitt — Chairperson Dorothy Kritz — Ex-officio, Grapevine Senior Activities Center (kw Doris Waite — Ex-officio, Grapevine Housing Authority Pat Frosch — Ex-officio, GRACE Anne Pitts Tena Burrell Absent Board Members were: Bruce Walters Martie Chaplin Others present: Ted Ware — City Council Liaison Linda Gregory— SAC Director Debra Wells — Housing Authority Director Sandra Millett— SeniorMovers Coordinator Chris Smith— Recreation Supervisor With the absence of Secretary Martie Chaplin, Pat and Linda took minutes. 2. Meeting was called to order by Edith Pewitt. Guests were introduced and welcomed. Cr' 3. The minutes of the previous meeting of August 6, 2004 were considered and approved without change. 4. The floor was opened for Citizen Request. There were none. (ive 5. Old Business — a. Report on GRACE ministry to Seniors by Pat Frosch. Copy Attached Bev Almaguer is the person supervising the Senior Program for GRACE. She will go to the Seniors home if needed. Page 1 of 3 (by Pat also reported on the Clinic and how well it is doing. They are in the process of plans to open a Stand Alone Clinic, hopefully by January 2006, as well as a Client Choice Food Pantry. The Clinic is for those with no other form of insurance coverage. GRACE also provides a Tech Center to provide Computer Training. When a person has completed the classes, they are given a free computer. In 2004 GRACE recorded 40,000 volunteer hours worth $150,000. in service. GRACE also provides Transitional Housing for up to 2 years. Cle b. Report on Senior Housing by Debra Wells. GHA manages 2 programs, Public Housing and Section 8. They have replaced the roofs, and gutters. Irrigation systems will be installed, beginning with Starr Place. Central Air Conditioning will also be coming soon. Grapevine residents get preference, but there is still a 3 year wait. They are considering opening registration for the month of June. Debra also reported that Glade Corners Retirement Community will no longer be taking Vouchers for their property. GHA does have a Resident Advisory Board, but have difficulty getting their residents to attend the meetings. The last meeting they included Bingo, and had better attendance. Residents are grateful for the sidewalk on the West side of Church that came along with the Church Street reconstruction. c. Report on SeniorMovers by Sandra Millet. The need is great for Volunteers. Sandra explained the huge amount of phone calls necessary to get just one volunteer. Linda told a story of how the program has recently helped one lady who is living with her daughter. Tena suggested we contact the Women's Division to ask about putting a call for volunteers in their monthly newsletter. Copy of most recent report attached. Praise was given to GRACE, Grapevine Housing Authority, and Grapevine Senior Activities Center. During the course of the above reports, discussion was held concerning tre needs, and the consensus seemed to be the issues are still Transportation, Affordable Housing, Utility Assistance, Prescription Assistance. Linda and SAC Staff will work on compiling a list of local Physicians that are taking Medicare patients. Sandra mentioned a new physician that has Page 2 of 3 limited her practice completely to making house calls. Dr. Mary Tang. Linda also said Dr. Michael Cohen, D.O. is taking Medicare patients. SAC Staff has attempted to form a Support Group for Seniors living with family, and will continue to pursue avenues for this much needed service. Cw 6. New Business a. P Meeting adjourned, Respectfully submitted, (ir Linda Gregory AT,c 0//4101_, NJ , stMfir (Ir fir Page 3 of 3 C PRESENTATION TO SENIOR CITIZEN ADVISORY BOARD GRACE guidelines are: citizens of GV, Southlake, & Colleyville 125% of poverty level (1=$970, 2=$1301) For many years, GRACE has been providing supplemental food for seniors and disabled in our service area. Income guidelines for this program are 185% of poverty (1=$1436, 2=$1926) SUPPLEMENTAL FOOD: food one time per month (delivered if needed) Can include staples, fruit, canned goods, meat, breads and sweets, and occasionally personal hygiene items GRACE partners with the GV Women's Division of the Chamber for Christmas: they go on the routes in October to get the seniors' Christmas wish list. They put the wishes on the tree at the Rec Center where people Cr take the wishes and return with the gifts. This year the Women's Division also made baskets for each recipient that included personal hygiene items. They deliver these the Saturday before Christmas. Also as part of the Supplemental food program, GRACE provides a Thanksgiving basket and a Christmas basket which includes all the necessary ingredients for the holiday dinner, including a turkey. LEND-A-HAND: Provides volunteer labor for home repair Two years ago, we got extra money from a grant and were able to provide a ceiling fan for each senior that wanted one. One of the LAH volunteers put each one together and installed each fan. Last year, GRACE raised the income limits for its senior Supplemental Food recipients only so they may be eligible for regular GRACE services, which can include 4 foods orders/yr, financial help with utilities, rent, and medications, and other assistance as needed.
