The Grapevine Senior Citizens Advisory Board met at 2 PM on October 6, 2006 at the Grapevine Senior Activities Center. The following members were present: Dick Guckel — Chairperson Tena Burrell — Co-Chairperson Dorothy Kritz— Ex-officio, Grapevine Senior Activities Center Pat Frosch — Ex-officio, GRACE Martie Chaplin, Secretary Paul Ernst Others present: Dr. Edith Pewitt (Immediate Past Chairperson) Kaye Grayson, SAC Director Ted Ware — City Council Member Liaison Detective Kelly Smith from Grapevine Police Department Ken Anderson, President, Friends of the Grapevine Senior Activities Center Debra Wells — representing Marian Nicastro, Housing Authority Ken Lambert— Interested Citizen Marilyn Chapman — Grapevine Citizen Those Not Present Marian Nicastro-- Ex-officio, Housing Authority R. Bruce Walters 2. Welcome Guests a. Dick Guckel introduced and welcomed Detective Kelly Smith from Grapevine Police Department 3. Presentation to Edith Pewitt The group went outside. Dick presented and dedicated to Edith Pewitt a tree planted on the Senior Activities Center in honor of her many years of service to the Center and Seniors in the community. A plaque accompanied the tree at its base that says "Edith Pewitt for service to the senior citizens" 1. Consideration of minutes for August 4, 2006 meeting ,,,,► The minutes were approved as distributed. 2. These are comments from people attending the meeting: • Ken Lambert expressed concern over the fact that the $3 million proposal to bring in the train through Grapevine and his believing that it will ruin what we already have. • Marilyn Chapman says she thinks the Senior Center is wonderful and she tells everybody that all the time. b. From board members None 3. New business: a. Identity Theft presentation by Detective Kelly Smith 817.410.3275 ksmith@ci.grapevine.tx.us Det. Smith has 27 years with City. Because of his experience with financial crimes he was selected to handle them and has done it for the last 3 years. (Irr Before the presentation Dorothy and Edith relayed their identify theft experiences. Ken Lambert relayed that he bought identity theft insurance when he was getting his renters insurance. Det. Smith commented some on the cost and warned just to be careful when shopping for insurance to get what you need. He then used a power point presentation to discuss Identity/Financial Theft in general and specific to the area. Presentation included statistics on increases in the problem, fastest growing crime in the country; how theft occurs using fraudulent checks, computers, credit/debit cards, unsecured mail in mailboxes, dumpster diving, break ins of homes, autos or businesses, as well as use of public data websites. He gave details on how to identify a secure internet website, Phishing (signs of fraudulent e- mails), and handle phone scams. Lead into discussion of what to do if you are victim of identity/financial theft. Many of the details are included in handout Det. Smith brought along. Tena opened discussion about the S.A.L.T. (Seniors and Law Enforcement Together) (iw Conference in Colleyville annually that provides lots of information to Seniors on how to protect themselves against various crimes. She mentioned that the "Protecting Senior Texans" handout Det. Smith distributed is one that is usually distributed there. Friends Of The Grapevine Senior Activities Center update – Ken Anderson, President Ken handed out updated information on the use of FOGSAC funds. See below in italics: This is an update to the presentation made on August 4, 2006. Following are the major accomplishments in the past two months: • Purchased and installed a Brunswick professional pool table. • Applied and received a $1,000 grant from IBM. • Purchased and installed 13 LCD displays for the computer class room using Mass Mutual and IBM grants. The LCD displays provide enhanced readability, more space for student's materials and improved viewing of projector screen. • Purchased Canon digital camera and accessories for GSAC staff. Gave training on camera's usage. • Planned and funded a recognition event to show appreciation for 28 volunteers and their spouse or friend in the computer program. The event will be a dinner and time to visit together at the Cross Timbers Winery on the evening of Oct 11. Future Plans • Identify appropriate GSAC projects to support • Continue to encourage membership through renewal and new members • Pursue further grants c. Housing Authority Update – Debra Wells for Marian Nicastro Because of natural attrition they have 2 openings in their apartments. Sprinkler System money is available and they have worked with architects and are in the bidding process now for their three properties. Dick's wife is one of the folks now going up twice a week to Worth property to manually water to help landscaping survive. In all, things are going smoothly. d. GRACE update on Open House – Pat Frosch GRACE dedicated their new building with pantry and clinic and all is going well. This last Tuesday night they had 2 doctors and Thursday 1—two clinic nights this week versus just one.. Pantry has 30-35 shoppers a week. Three to four thousand dollars per week are used. Debbie asked Pat what to do if she has a resident needing extra food help. Pat said to have her call Bev. They also are talking after the meeting to see what else can be done. (60 e. Senior Activities Center update – Kaye Grayson 1. Elder Family Caregiver Education and Support Group - Tena Burrell . ' GRAPEVINE SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY BOARD Minutes of October 6, 2006 Meeting Page 4 of 4 Tena was not able to be there last week for program but heard it was very successful. Tena said They're having a great deal of success with support group meetings and programs. There was discussion of how very successful Area Agency on Aging is at getting volunteers and/or contract experts on topics to deliver during programs. 2. Report on advertising - Dick Guckel Because of Dick's marketing background, he is stepping up the efforts at getting information out to the community about the Center. In September he published an article in Grape Affair; and another one in October. An article will also appear in the Citywide newsletter and he believes a picture of the tree dedication in Edith's honor is part of it. Martie suggested spelling out Grapevine Senior Citizens Advisory Board rather than using an acronym on monthly calendar to help folks who are not familiar with the reference to the Board using the acronym. Kaye and Dick will look for places where the acronym is used to see if there is room to spell it out. 3. Senior Activities Center— Kaye Grayson firf Seniors are really enjoying the new pool table. The giving of flu and pneumonia shots is scheduled. Dick's doctor said those over 65 don't need to get pneumonia shot. Pros and cons were discussed. Dan Tron, Bus Driver retired and they are looking for a new one. Mayor came out day before yesterday and gave explanation of new sales tax legislation. 7. To Do There is nothing to follow up on. 8.
