Call to Order The Grapevine Senior Citizens Advisory Board met at 3:30 PM on June 1, 2010 at the Grapevine Senior Activities Center. The following members were present Tena Burrell, Co-Chairperson Pam Price, Secretary Paul Ernst Francia Arrigan, Ex-offico, GRACE (dell Bowker, Ex-offico, GRACE Joetta King, Ex-offico, Housing Authority Dorothy Kritz, Ex-offico, Grapevine Senior Activities Center Others present Kaye Grayson, SAC Director Chris Smith, Recreation Superintendent, Parks & Recreation Roy Stewart, City Council Member Liaison Those not present Dick Guckel, Chairperson Carey Miller 2. Welcome Guests There were no guests present. 3. Consideration of minutes for April 6, 2010 meeting The minutes were approved as read. 4. Citizen Requests There were no requests to be brought before the Board. 5. New Business a. Housing Authority update — Joetta King There was no report. C b. GRACE update — Francia Arrigan and [dell Bowker 1/4 (16, Francia presented a handout explaining the new Senior Program which will redesign GRACE's current Senior Commodities Program striving to provide better assessment and coordination of services for seniors within the community of Grapevine, Southlake and Colleyville. The purpose of this program is to coordinate informal and formal services and supports that reduce social and physical isolation among senior residents ages 55 and older. Outcomes for this program include community partnership; volunteer engagement; case assessment and management; and resource leverage and delivery. Areas to be addressed are far-reaching — more than just simply delivery of commodities once a week, but including a variety of ways that the volunteer can befriend and work with a senior in a one-on-one environment that can assist that person in day-by-day situations within his home life. GRACE will assess each senior's needs to determine what the senior volunteer who is matched with him or her can do to provide this assistance. Volunteer training will be offered by GRACE. The Women's Division of the Chamber of Commerce will again arrange to have school supplies for students who qualify through GRACE. From July 12- August 16 GRACE will be taking orders; distribution will be at the end of August right before school starts. c. Senior Activities Center update (bri Senior Water Aerobics starts June 1st at Dove Pool. Classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 until 9:45 a.m. The classes are free but donations are appreciated. Steps with hand rails make getting in and out of the pool very easy. Registration at the SAC is required before taking the class. The first day of the aerobics class had 30 seniors present. The monthly dance is this Saturday night, June 5th, at the SAC. Pete & Patti will be performing from 7-9:30 p.m. The cost is $5 per person at the door. *Free dance lessons will be taught by qualified instructors from "Dance on the Vine" from 6-7pm. On June 11th there will be a Hawaiian Luau sponsored by the SAC Advisory Council. The cost is $3 per person for lunch which will be served at Noon. Special entertainment will be provided along with delicious food and refreshments. Sign up at the front desk. On Friday, June 4th a group of seniors will go to the Bob Jones Nature Center for a special program. A guided tour of the Nature Center to see blooms of native Texas plants and a light breakfast will be served. The bus will leave the SAC at 9:15 a.m. and reservations are required. The program is free. A presentation by Tena Burrell, Certified Senior Advisor, entitled "Savvy Social Security Planning" will take place on June 22nd at 10:30 a.m. at the SAC. Reservations are recommended by calling 817-424-5721. 2/4 V . (irr Dorothy Kritz mentioned that the SAC Choir has a need for a backup pianist. The choir meets weekly from 10:30-11:30 on Thursday mornings. Other activities for the seniors who are interested include the Tuesday July 27th trip to Choctaw Casino. A bus with a capacity for 55 people will be provided by the Casino. The excursion will run from 8:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. The trip to Canada provided by Collette Vacations is scheduled for September 30th. The due date for signing up has passed, but if there are openings, more who are interested will be allowed to go. Seniors are being given the opportunity to attend the Mesquite Rodeo; the cost is $10 per person and this will include a meal. The bus will depart from the SAC at 5:30 on June 11th d. Senior Service Alliance Group update —Tena Burrell In addition to the GRACE and Vial of Life Program (a nonprofit organization), the Grapevine Senior Activity Center (SAC) posts their monthly newsletter online at www.gvpard.com. Here residents can find out about any other events such as the "Outreach Benefits Counselor educational session" from AAA of Tarrant County, Metroport Meals on Wheels lunches, etc... involved with the Grapevine SAC. On July 22nd at 10:30am Tena Burrell, CSA will be presenting a program for"Savvy Social Security Planning." Board members and seniors are asked to share this message with anyone who might need this type of information. Regarding the Vial of Life Program, Tena has ordered decals to distribute to those in need when helping them complete the medication form. This will be a monthly project at the SAC in conjunction with GRACE. Potential volunteers are encouraged to contact Tena to sign up; this is a project that all SSA members will be expected to work on at least one month each quarter. Those involved with SSA have made the commitment, and this service will be a reflection of the entire group. To keep them better informed and updated on the Vial of Life Program, Tena has plans to meet with the Grapevine Fire Department EMT staff in July. The Grapevine Fire Deputy Chief- Administrator has agreed to allow Tena Burrell to do so on behalf of the SSA. Francia Arrigan and (dell Bowker from GRACE will continue to give updates on their "Adopt a Senior Program" that GRACE is developing. Currently the monthly resource table at the SAC is an additional line of communication with the senior community in Grapevine. This will be set up on the 4th Tuesday morning of the month at 10:30am. All SSA members have been encouraged to volunteer through GRACE whenever possible. They will need to contact Francia or 'dell to get involved! Amy, the GRACE Clinic Liaison still needs help (especially Medical Equipment) on Tuesday evenings at the GRACE Clinic! 3/4 . • (6, Chris Smith stated that the GVPARD summer camps will start the week of June 7th. One event will be a triathlon that includes swimming 300 yards at the City Pool, biking for 20kilometers and running for 3.7 miles. Roger Jones and other members of an amateur ham radio club will help relaying messages during the event. 6.
