Kaye ays , Director Grape ne Senior Activities Center L • GRAPEVINE SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY BOARD Minutes of Tuesday, August 3, 2010 meeting Grapevine Senior Activities Center 421 Church Street Grapevine, TX 76051 817-410-8130 1. Call to Order The Grapevine Senior Citizens Advisory Board met at 3:30 PM on August 3, 2010 at the Grapevine Senior Activities Center. The following members were present: Tena Burrell, Co-Chairperson Pam Price, Secretary Kay Blanding, new member to the board Paul Ernst Francia Arrigan, Ex-officio, GRACE (dell Bowker, Ex-officio, GRACE Joetta King, Ex-officio, Housing Authority Dorothy Kritz, Ex-officio, Grapevine Senior Activities Center Others present: Kaye Grayson, SAC Director Chris Smith, Recreation Superintendent, Parks & Recreation Roy Stewart, City Council Member Liaison Those not present: Dick Guckel, Chairperson Carey Miller 2. Welcome Guests There were no guests present. 3. Consideration of minutes for June 1, 2010 meeting The minutes were approved as read. 4. Citizen Requests There were no requests to be brought before the Board. 5. New Business a. Monthly Dances at the SAC — Kaye Grayson/Dorothy Kritz The monthly dances are held once a month on Saturdays from 7:00-9:30 PM. Visitors from out-of-town make the circuit throughout the Metroplex. In the future, the SAC is looking at cutting back the frequency of the dances — perhaps to quarterly dances. There is a $5.00 entry fee, but with the cost of the staff and band, 100803 GSCAB minutes final 1/4 the Center does not break even. There is a possibility that dances may be eliminated. Previously there were approximately 46 people attending but now attendance has dropped down to 25-30. From 6:00-7:00 PM dancing lessons have been given before the dance. Our SAC facility is smaller than others like the one in Irving. Our resources needed to be focused toward our Grapevine residents. Currently contracts with bands have been set up through December 2010. This is the time to be considering the 2011 budget so concern about maintaining the dances is one item to be discussed. b. Housing Authority update — Joetta King There are currently no vacancies in the housing units. A couple of units will be available soon and new tenants have been selected. The only projects under way involve the continuing installation of new cabinets and flooring in 'make ready units.' Tenants willing to pack up possessions in occupied units will also receive new cabinets but not flooring. First United Methodist Church (Grapevine/Heritage) has been accepting donations to purchase ceiling fans for housing units. The fans will be installed by City of Grapevine maintenance staff. c. GRACE update— Francia Arrigan/Idell Bowker Cre The new program being introduced to the Seniors has been named "Friends and Family." GRACE has set up two volunteer training sessions: Thursday, September 23rd from 2:00-4:00 PM and Tuesday, September 28th from 10:00 AM-Noon. ldell has currently targeted 25 Seniors to be involved with the program right now. The plan is to match one volunteer per Senior and offering training periodically for the volunteers. In January 2011, the program will be evaluated and more Seniors added to it, SeniorFest, which is sponsored by the Women's Division of the Chamber of Commerce, will be Saturday, August 7th at the Convention Center. There have been 266 reservations made for the event. With school beginning in Grapevine on August 23rd, GRACE and the Women's Division have planned their annual distribution of school supplies for August 19th. The Women's Division has donated supplies and backpacks for this project. On August 18th a room at the Grapevine Community Activities Center (CAC) will be set up for the distribution. The July Summer Santa commodities were delivered by members from the Women's Division. In October sign up for the Christmas Cottage will begin. d. Senior Activities Center update — Kaye Grayson/Dorothy Kritz/Chris Smith We have 11 people that are going on the Collette Vacations trip to the Canadian Rockies that departs on September 30th. Our next trip with Collette is set for April 100803 GSCAB minutes_final 2/4 11th...Reflections of Italy. A slideshow presentation on this trip is scheduled for September 21st at 10:00 a.m. at the SAC. Our trip to Choctaw Casino in Oklahoma was a huge success. We had over 100 people go on the trip on July 27th. The casino provided two buses that left the SAC at 8AM and returned to the SAC around 5:30 that afternoon. The seniors really enjoyed the new casino and are ready to go back again! We plan on offering this trip several times a year. We are going to see the Rangers play the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday, August 24th. We leave the SAC at 5:30; game time is 7:05 p.m. The cost is $13 per person. Interested persons must sign up and pay at the front desk by Friday, August 6th (We have great covered seating; there are no steps or stairs) Computer registration was on Monday, August 2"d. The final numbers on how many registered are not available yet. Normally August registration is lower than other times of the year. Registration will continue throughout the week for classes that start on Monday. Call the SAC for more information on registering for computer classes. Our next AARP Defensive Driving class is scheduled for Tuesday, September 14th from 1-5pm at the SAC. AARP members pay $12; non-members pay $14 to the instructor on the day of class. Sign up at the front desk or by calling the SAC. There is an Identity Theft Seminar scheduled for Tuesday, September 28th from 10- 11:30 am at the SAC. This seminar is being organized and presented by Congressman Kenny Marchant's office. Registration information will be coming soon for this free program. Chris Smith, Recreation Superintendent, Parks & Recreation (GVPARD), told the Board about summer activities planned by the GVPARD including baseball tournaments and popular sailing and outdoor adventure camps. One company sponsored a World Series baseball tournament. During the first week, there were 82 teams participating; that included 18 out-of-the-Grapevine-area teams. Forty percent were travel teams. There was lots of support from the Grapevine Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB). People enjoy coming to Grapevine and want to offer this tournament next year. Due to rain some events at other towns' baseball tournaments had to be cancelled but with the care provided by our GVPARD staff for our grounds, of the 350 games, none were cancelled. Grapevine has seen a good economic impact after the renovation of our baseball park complex. Dove Pool Water Aerobics are held in the summer months; approximately 60 people sign up. On the average there are 30 attending each session. The Fall/Winter Playbook will come out in the near future. 100803 GSCAB minutes final 3/4 • tir Roy Stewart, our City Council Member Liaison, commented on the economic effects felt by the city. The city budget begins October 1 and since we base the major part of our income on sales taxes, we have serious concerns to address. Drastic needs will need to be taken, although Grapevine is better off than other area cities. Cuts in budget items and personnel will be taken. Property tax evaluations are down. Grapevine's 35-cents per $100 ad valorem tax base is one of the lowest in the area cities. The new CVB building on the corner of Main and Hudgins streets will be opened June 2011. Highway 114 construction may hurt GrapeFest (the weekend of September 16-19). It did hurt the Main Street Outdoor Adventure festival last May. The city has communicated with the DFW Connector staff about its concerns that roads need to be open and more signage needs to be added. The DFW Connector spokesperson addressed the Women's Division and will also meet with the Chamber of Commerce. There is an excellent website for the DFW Connector: http://www.dfwconnector.com/index flash.php. e. Senior Service Alliance Group update — Tena Burrell The Senior Service Alliance Group kickoff for the Vial of Life Program at the Grapevine SAC was on Tuesday July 27th, 2010. It went very well; there were 4 volunteers who helped 8 Seniors complete their medical information and Durable Medical Power of Attorney. The DPOA forms were provided by Tena Burrell, on behalf of the SSA and the Area Agency on Aging website. It took approximately 30 minutes to complete this information for each Senior who participated. Therefore next month there will be more volunteers to assist and hopefully more Senior participants, as many had gone on a day trip to the Oklahoma casino. The effort to keep this information updated will better enable the Grapevine Fire Dept. EMTs and Police to help our Seniors and disabled in the Grapevine community, Tena Burrell has met with the Deputy of the Grapevine Fire Dept. to ensure the EMTs are informed to be on the lookout for the Vial of Life Information when entering a Senior or disabled person's home. GRACE and the Grapevine Housing Authority have been advised of the program and invited to participate. The Vial of Life program will be continued the 4th Tuesday of each month at the GSAC at 10:30 AM. 6. The meeting was adjourned at 4:20 PM. Respectfully submitted, Pav-m) 'PPA- Pam Price, Secretary at1-4-0Minutes approved by the Board on J day of , 2010. C 100803 GSCAB minutes Final.doc 4/4
