Call to Order The Grapevine Senior Citizens Advisory Board met at 3:30 PM on October 5, 2010 at the Grapevine Senior Activities Center. The following members were present: Tena Burrell, Co-Chairperson Pam Price, Secretary Kay Blanding, new member to the board Paul Ernst Carey Miller Francia Arrigan, Ex-offico, GRACE Idell Bowker, Ex-offico, GRACE Joetta King, Ex-offico, Housing Authority Dorothy Kritz, Ex-offico, Grapevine Senior Activities Center (hr Others present: Kaye Grayson, SAC Director Chris Smith, Recreation Superintendent, Parks & Recreation Roy Stewart, City Council Member Liaison Those not present: Dick Guckel, Chairperson 2. Welcome Guests There were no guests present. 3. Consideration of minutes for August 3, 2010 meeting The minutes were approved as read. 4. Citizen Requests There were no requests to be brought before the Board. 5. New Business a. Recognition of GHS student Sarah Park-Eileen Hinson and Kaye Grayson In the past month, more than thirty senior citizens from the SAC went to the Polar Ice House inside Grapevine Mills Mall to enjoy a series of figure skating performances executed to 1940s-1950s music. The six skaters performed as 2010 10 05 GSCAB Minutes_Final 1/4 C. individual skates as well as in a group.Thanks to private and corporate donations, this outing raised $600, of which $450 was donated to the SAC. This event was organized by Grapevine High School senior Sarah Park. With friends helping with the advertising at the mall, Sarah recruited the skaters and organized the publicity. b. Housing Authority update— Joetta King Joetta King reported that currently there are no vacancies in the housing units. A couple of units will be available soon and new tenants have been selected. The only projects under way involve the continuing installation of new cabinets and flooring in 'make ready units.' Tenants willing to pack up possessions in occupied units will also receive new cabinets but not flooring. First United Methodist Church (Grapevine/Heritage) has been accepting donations to purchase ceiling fans for housing units. The fans will be installed by City of Grapevine maintenance staff. c. GRACE update — Francia Arrigan Francia Arrigan presented an update on the Senior Pilot Program. In September, GRACE trained 18 volunteers; 5 new volunteers will be trained in October. Currently GRACE is working on assessing the 25 seniors participating within pilot to identify area of interests. Follow ups have been to match trained volunteers Cr with seniors In her commodities report, Francia stated that groceries have been delivered to 85 seniors. Other activities that GRACE has participated in include being at the Senior Empowerment Fair Friday, October 1, and going to the Colleyville Annual Senior Health Fair Friday, October 8 from 9 AM to Noon. Grapevine Women Division will start their Christmas for senior's sign-ups on October 20th (during regular Commodities delivery). d. Senior Activities Center update-Kaye Grayson and Dorothy Kritz Friday, October 1 a group of seniors from the SAC attended the Empowering Seniors Expo which included vendors, door prizes, health screenings, entertainment and a free lunch for anyone age 50+. This is the second annual Expo sponsored by Commissioner Gary Fickes. Over 600 seniors were expected to attend the event this year. Tena Burrell, GSCAB Co-Chair, attended the event and represented the SAC by handing out brochures on activities and upcoming events at the SAC. Last week the SAC had its first of three trips to the State Fair....all three trips are full with waiting lists. A bus from the SAC goes on Thursdays when the (iw admission for seniors is free. 2010 10 05 GSCAB Minutes_Final 2/4 The Flu shot clinics at the SAC are coming up on October 8th and October 22nd. There are still plenty of openings on both days from 10-2pm. People are encouraged to call the SAC to sign up. There is no cost for those with their Medicare Card Part B; otherwise, the cost is $18. Computer classes started Monday, October 4th for the Fall semester. The total number of people that registered was 52. This is about average for this time of year. Classes will run through November 18th. Dave Lieber, Fort Worth Star-Telegram columnist, will be here on October 19th at 10:00 a.m. for a presentation on scams and other corporate thievery. Dave is very entertaining and informative; seniors are encouraged to attend this program. He regularly does presentations for groups all over the Metroplex. The SAC bus provided transportation today, October 5th, taking seniors to the "Taps and Tunes" performance at the Scott Theater in Fort Worth. The charge of $5 included box lunches for those who attended. The Diabetes Workshop at the SAC currently has 13 seniors enrolled; since the maximum number that can participate is 20, the program can accept 7 more people. On the 4th Tuesday of the month Senior Services Alliance's "Vial of Life Program" will be offered. Seniors can go to Woodridge or GRACE. Blood Pressure checks will be available. Kenny Marchant's office representatives come to the SAC on the 4th Tuesday of the month. Veterans are given aid. Seniors are advised about security issues such as not giving out their Social Security Card or Medicare Card numbers or even carrying those cards unless for a particular reason. These cards should be kept in a safe and secure location when not being used. There is a waiting list of those who are interested in attending these sessions. County Commissioner Gary Fickes has started a project titled "Senior Empowerment", which is in its second year. His Outreach Coordinator Rebecca Barksdale has asked for the Grapevine SAC to be involved with input and if there is any way in which the State Funds that have been set aside for seniors can help us in Grapevine. Tena Burrell will ask Eileen to add it to the agenda so we can discuss it at our December meeting. Also she will invite Rebecca Barksdale to attend our next meeting to better explain the program. Carey Miller, a member of the Grapevine Senior Citizens Advisory Board, will be the Center's representative. e. City Council update- Roy Stewart, City Council Member Liaison Roy Stewart informed the Board that the City's new budget for fiscal year October 1, 2010 — September 30, 2011 has begun. Five employees of the 2010 10 05 GSCAB Minutes_Final 3/4 . Convention and Visitors Bureau have been cut. The City did maintain the 35-cent /$100 rate. New businesses are coming to Grapevine. In the building once occupied on Highway 114 frontage road off Main Street by Tia's Mexican Food restaurant will be the home of Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen. There will be more restaurants at William D. Tate and the Access Road to Highway 114. A new Mexican food restaurant will be located on Main Street near Bob's Steakhouse. A 350-room hotel will be constructed by Toby Keith north of Embassy Suites. In Grapevine Mills, a skateboard area will be built on an acre. A LegoLand is in the process of being built and plans to open June 2011. The area occupied by Gameworks will be transformed into an Aquarium. A $7.5 million project to remodel the theater at Grapevine Mills will become a Dinner and Theater site. On the corner of Pool Road and Hall-Johnson Road which was once occupied by a Food Lion Grocery Store, Compass Christian Church will be built. It will redo the parking area and GRACE will open a pickup center at that location. In Grapevine, near the CVS Pharmacy at Pool Road and Highway 26, a large "Dancing Rivers" senior citizens home will open in November 2010. Beds for up to 85 residents will be available; there will be a "memory section" (Alzheimer's unit) as well as assisted living area are going to be provided. The DFW Connector road construction continues and communication regarding (p. changes and updates is given on a regular basis to the City by the construction company's public relations staff. There were problems centered around the traffic during Main Street Days last May; these were corrected for September's GrapeFest. 6.
