SUBJECT: LEFT TURN PROHIBITION ON WILLIAM D. T E AVENUE AT
COMMERICAL DRIVEWAY
RECOMMENDATION:
City Council consider adopting an ordinance amending the Grapevine Code of
Ordinances, Chapter 23 Traffic, Section 23-34, Turns Prohibited, to prohibit left turns
from southbound William D. Tate Avenue into the first driveway no of State Highway
114, and take any necessary action.
BACKGROUND:
The first commercial driveway on the east side of William D. Tate Avenue north of State
Highway 114 serves the Towers of Grapevine development. See attached schematic for
the driveway location. This was intended to be a right-in/right-out driveway due to its
close proximity to the freeway interchange and a center median in William D. Tate
Avenue at this location. The development is also served by other full-access driveways
t o t he north, as well as other access points on the frontage road.
As part oft DFW Connector construction, a raised median was built on William D.
Tate Avenue which extends north, past this first driveway. However, it has been
repeatedly observed that southbound traffic will drive to the left side of the raised
median and use the oncoming northbound lanes in order to make the left turn into the
driveway.
This ordinance specifically prohibits the southbound left turn from William D. Tate
Avenue into this first driveway.
Police Department staff were consulted and concur with the need to post this turn
restriction.
