SUBJECT. CONSIDER APPROVAL FOR THE PURCHASE OF AN
AUTOMATED EMERGENCY VEHICLE EXHAUST SYSTEM
FOR THE FIRE DEPARTMENT
RECOMMENDATION:
City Council to consider approval for the purchase of an automated emergency exhaust
system from Air Cleaning Technologies in the total amount of$102,346.
FUNDING SOURCE:
Funds are budgeted in account 325-48860-210-10-2010 Capital Equipment/Machinery
Purchase. Fund/Machinery and Equipment/Fire Department.
BACKGROUND:
Bids were taken in accordance with Local Government Code Chapter 252, Subchapter
B, Section 252`.021 (a) and Section 252.041 (a). The bid was advertised in the Fort
Worth Star Telegram on December 10, 2009 and December 17, 2009.
This request is to approve the purchase of an automated emergency exhaust system to
be installed in various configurations at fire stations one through five and the fire reserve
building at the City Service Center. Diesel exhaust accumulation in the living quarters of
fire stations has proven to cause many associated health problems for firefighters.
Carcinogens such as Benzene and Carbon Monoxide are the by-products of diesel
exhaust and are the root of many respiratory diseases. The estimated budget in 2009
for this project was $170,000. The Air Cleaning Technologies bid represents a $67,654
savings from the estimated cost and Staff is satisfied that Air Cleaning Technologies will
provide a cost effective product that will meet the requirements of the exhaust system.
Staff issued invitations to bid to nine qualified contractors for this project and received
seven responses. A copy of the bid tabulation is attached for review. The lowest bid was
from Air Cleaning Technologies. Staff reviewed each bid received and met with
representatives from Air Cleaning Technologies. This company has a long track record
of providing fire department installations.
Staff recommends approval to award a contract and purchase order to Air Cleaning
Technologies for the exhaust system in an amount not to exceed $102,346.
