HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem 15 - Population Estimate MEMO TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS FROM: BRUNO RUMBELOW, CITY MANAGER MEETING DATE: JANUARY 19, 2010 SUBJECT: 2009 POPULATION ESTIMATE RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the City Council adopt a resolution setting the population at 49,878 as of December 31, 2009. BACKGROUND. The estimated population as of December 31, 2008 was 49,797. Between the end of 2008 and December 31, 2009, an additional 30 single-family construction permits and 6 single- family demolition permits were issued along with four multi-family demolition permits. A total of 296 multi-family units were permitted; however, 291 units are still under construction and Will not be counted until the 2010 estimate. A single-family ratio of 2.94 persons per unit and a 99.5% occupancy ratio were applied to the net single-family unit gain. A multi-family household ratio of 2.25 persons per unit and a 90.8% occupancy ratio were applied to the multi-family unit gain. These ratios and percentages were derived from the 2000 Census information. These calculations yielded a population gain of 81 persons during 2009 for a total population of 49,878 persons by December 31, 2009. Grapevine's population has grown rapidly since 1970. Steady growth has been experienced in the past 30 years with the only limiting factor being the availability of residential land. dt R:IAGENDA101-19-10109 pop memo.doc Q� RESOLUTION NO. A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GRAPEVINE, TEXAS; MAKING OFFICIAL THE FINDING AND DETERMINATION AS TO THE POPULATION AND NUMBER OF INHABITANTS OF AND WITHIN THE CITY OF GRAPEVINE, TEXAS, AS OF DECEMBER 31, 2009 AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE WHEREAS, the City Council of Grapevine, Texas, has found and determined that it will be for the benefit of said City to have a revised estimate of the population and number of inhabitants, and that the City make an official finding thereof; and WHEREAS, the City C'ounc'il has directed that an unofficial census of the population of the City of Grapevine be taken; and WHEREAS, based upon the 2000 Census Report, City building records, and the investigation and review of the City's growth by the Development Services Department, it has been found and determined that the City of Grapevine; Texas, as of December 31, 2009 actually has within its limits a population of 49,878. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GRAPEVINE, TEXAS: Section 1. That the City Council has officially found and determined, and does now find and determine, that the population of the City of Grapevine, Texas, as of the 31 st day of December 2009, is 49,878. Section 2. That the City Secretary is hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the Texas Highway Department so that they may change the population signs on the roads and highways entering and leaving the City of Grapevine, Texas. Section 3. .' That this resolution shall become effective from and after the date of its final passage.
