SUBJECT: PURCHASE OF TRAFFIC CABLE FOR THE ADAPTIVE
TRAFFIC SIGNAL CONTROL SYSTEM
RECOMMENDATION:
City Council to consider approval to purchase CAT5 Outdoor and IMSA Traffic Signal
Cable for the adaptive traffic signal control system from Traffic Signal, Inc. The total cost
is not to exceed $44,165.00.

Funding for this purchase is currently available in the following accounts:
113-48899-415-06 Grant Fund/Infrastructure/Traffic/Traffic Signal Retiming (COG)
113-48899-415-07 Grant Fund/Infrastructure/Traffic/Adaptive Traffic MG TxDot
113-48899-415-08 Grant Fund/Infrastructure/Traffic/ARRA Energy Grant
BACKGROUND:
Quotations were taken in accordance with City Purchasing Policy. Formal bids and
advertisements are not required for purchases under $50,000. Three vendors submitted
quotations. Traffic Signal, Inc. was the lowest quote received that met the required
specifications. A copy of the bid tabulation listing all pricing received is attached for
review.
This request is for approval to purchase traffic cable for the adaptive traffic signal control
system that is being installed at 52 signals. The adaptive signal control vendor, Rhythm
Engineering, will be supplying the adaptive control equipment and City staff will be
installing the equipment. City staff will also be purchasing and installing the necessary
cable to connect all the adaptive equipment. The Category 5E cable serves as the data
communication medium between the video detection cameras and the adaptive signal
controller while the IMSA 20-1 cable will be used for powering the cameras.
Staff recommends approval to purchase the traffic cable from Traffic Signal, Inc. in the
total annual amount of$44,165.00.
