FROM: BRUNO RUMBELOW, CITY MANAGER
MEETING DATE: JULY 21, 2020
SUBJECT: APPROVAL OF INTEGRATED LIBRARY SYSTEM REPLACEMENT
PROJECT
RECOMMENDATION: City Council to consider the purchase of new Koha (integrated library
system - ILS) by Bywater Solutions, and procurement of all ILS system
requirements to replace the current ILS.
FUNDING SOURCE: Funding is available in the General Fund for the Library in an amount not
to exceed $70,000.
BACKGROUND: The proposed purchase is Koha which is an integrated library operating
system that will replace the one currently in place. The Koha integrated
library operating system is the technological backbone of the library,
tracking acquisitions, catalog, circulation, payments, subscriptions and
online public access. Koha offers enhanced capabilities for customers
over the current system and will save approximately $40,000 per year over
current costs as it is an open source software. In addition, Koha is
browser based and and doesn't require special installations on staff
machines, making it easier to access in emergencies and less labor
intensive for our IT staff.
ByWater Solutions will host the server, implement the software, train City
staff, and provide support services.
Staff recommends approval.
