A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
GRAPEVINE, TEXAS EXPRESSING SUPPORT FOR THE
CITY OF ARLINGTON, TEXAS' EFFORT TO SECURE THE
2012 OLYMPIC COMPETITION AND PROVIDING AN
EFFECTIVE DATE
WHEREAS, the ancient Greeks used sports competition between nations to
develop understanding befinreen different peoples and to foster a mutual respect based on
face-to-face competition in what became known as the Olympics; and
WHEREAS, the modern day Summer Olympics bring athletes from around the world
every four years to compete in a whole array of sporting events and, in the process,
introduce these young athletes to peers from around the world; and
WHEREAS, the Summer Olympics traditionally are held in cities that have strong
values and traditions which the Olympic competition represents and that also are vibrant
and dynamic communities; and
WHEREAS, the City of Arlington, Texas and a group of its citizens have elected to
«° -0 enter the competition for the 2012 Summer Olympics on behalf of Arlington and the entire
metroplex; and
WHEREAS, the City of Arlington, Texas will need the support of all North Texas
communities to successfully host the 2012 Summer Olympics.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF GRAPEVINE, TEXAS:
Section 1. That the City of Grapevine supports the efforts of the City of Arlington,
Texas to compete for the right to host the 2012 Summer Olympics in the North Texas
region so that residents of this great part of Texas have the opportunity to see first hand
the finest sports competition in the world in the form of the Olympics and, in turn, the region
has the opportunity to show the world the wonderFul and great assets and outstanding
people that we have in North Texas.
Section 2. That this resolution shall take effect from and after the date of its
passage.
