This letter confirms on August 10, 2020 the Historic Preservation Commission staff approved
with conditions_#CA20-58 for the property addressed 834 East Texas Street, legally
described as Block 5, Lot 5, City of Grapevine Texas. The following was approved on this
Certificate of Appropriateness:
1. Remove existing non -original wood front door and replace it with a salvaged 14 panel
wood door with view panel; wood door to be striped of paint and restored;
as per the attached photo with the condition a permit is obtained from the Building
Department.
An approved Certificate of Appropriateness is not an approved building permit; a
building permit is / is not required. Contact the City of Grapevine's Building
Department at 817.410.3165 for fees and information regarding permits.

Shelton House, c. 1949
The house was built in 1949 for the Rodney F. Shelton family on a large 13,881 sq. ft. lot in the in the D. E.
Box Addition. Rodney Shelton married Clara Bess Stewart from an old Grapevine farming family in 1936.
He was elected to the Grapevine School Board to serve as the Vocational Agriculture teacher at Grapevine
High School in 1939. Rodney was active in church, civic and service groups in Grapevine and elected to
the Grapevine City Council for five consecutive terms. He and earned his Master's Degree in Horticulture
at Texas A & M in 1942 and received his Doctor of Education degree from North Texas State University in
1955. He later moved to Dallas and served as an administrator with the Dallas Independent School district
and lived in Oak Cliff section of the City.
Clara Bess Stewart Shelton was the granddaughter of Bob Stewart and niece of Clara Stewart
Watson. Clara Bess Stewart Shelton inherited the large brick prairie -style Stewart House located at 223
East College Street, from her aunt in 1971.
