f BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GRAPEVINE,
� TEXAS :
� Section l . That Chapter 20, Article III, Section 20-44 of
, the Grapevine Code of Ordinances relating to Driveway Design and
` Placement Standards is hereby amended by providing amendments and
� by renumbering said section as shown in Exhibit "A" , attached
; hereto and made a part hereof.

Section 2. Any person violating any of the provisions of
this ordinance shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor and upon
conviction thereof shall be fined in a sum not to exceed Five
Hundred Dollars ($500 . 00) for each offense and a separate offense
shall be deemed committed each day during or on which an offense
occurs or continues .
Section 3 . If any section, article, paragraph, sentence,
3 ' clause, phrase or word in this ordinance, or application thereto
any person or circumstances is held invalid or unconstitutional
�,,;� by a Court of competent jurisdiction, such holding shall not
affect the validity of the remaining portions of this ordinance
and the City Council hereby declares it would have passed such
remaining portions of the ordinance despite such invalidity which
remaining portions shall remain in full force and effect.
Section 4 . The fact that the present ordinances and
regulations of the City of Grapevine, Texas, are inadequate to
properly safeguard the health, safety, morals, peace, and general
welfare of the public creates an emergency which requires that
this ordinance become effective from and after the date of its
passage, and it is accordingly so ordained.

Sec. 20-44. DRIVE4�,Y DESIQV & PLACII�QT STANDARAS
�y� A. Definition of Driveway Types: For the purposes of interpreting the
provisions of these rules and regulations, the following definitions shall
apply.
� 1. Residential Driveway: One which provides access to a single family
residence, or a duplex. These drives shall, whenever possible,
intersect on collector or residential type roadways only.
2. Co�rercial Driveuray: One which provides access to an office,
retail or institutional building or to a multi-family ccenplex having
more than two units. It is anticigated that such buildings will have
incidental truck service. Commercial drives shall access, whenever
possible, onto collector and arterial thoroughfares only. In those
cases where camnercial drives must access residential streets, the
spacinq requirements of collector streets shall govern the driveway
place.ment. (Fig. 20.2)
3. Industrial Driveway: One which directly services substantial
ntanbers of truck mQvements to and frcan loading docks of an industrial
facility, warehouse or truck teiminal. A centralized retail
develo�anent, such as a con4rnznity or regional shopping center, may have
one or more driveways specially designed, signed and located to provide
� access for trucks and such driveways shall be considered industrial
driveways. Industrial plant driveways whose principal function it is
to serve ac�iinistrative or employee parking lots shall be considered a
°'�'� co�nercial driveway. Industrial drives shall access, whenever
possible, to arterial thoroughfares or industrial roadways. In those
cases where industrial drives must access residential or collector
streets, the spacing requirements for minor arterials shall govern the
driveway placement. (Fig. 20.2)
4. Residential Local Street: Street not designated as a thoroughfare
on the Grapevine Thoroughfare Plan.
5. Non-Residential Local Street: Street not designated as a
thoroughfare on the Grapevine Thoroughfare Plan.
B. State Highways: All driveways on State rnunb�red highways shall conf�nn
to the nbre restrictive of the most current State Depa.rtrrent of Highways
and Public Transportation regulations regarding driveway placement and
construction or the City of Grapevine Standards.
C. Driveway Dimensions:
1. Driveway Widths: As the tenn is used here, the width of a driveway
refers to the width of pavement at the property line. No praperty
shall have drive widths in excess of sixty percent (60$) of the
property frontage.

width of twenty-five feet (25') . (Fig. 20.1) Joint access
residenti.al drives shall have a minimtun width of twenty feet (20') ,.��u
and no less than nine feet (9') on either property. (Fig. 20.3)
(b) Calmtercial/Industrial Driveways, Two-way operation (90 � �6
degrees only) :
i. Comnercial drives shall have a minim�an width of tv,�nty
feet (20') and a maximum width of €ei-tp-�eet
(481) forty-five feet (45') . (Fig. 20.2)
ii. Industrial drives shall have a minim�un width of thirty
feet (30') and a maxim�un width of �e�t� �eet
(491) forty-five feet (45') . (Fig. 20.2)
iii. Joint access drives shall meet or exceed the mini.m«n
required width and have no less than ten feet (10') on either
i propert_y. The full drive width and access pav�nent to both
� properties shall be constructed with the first develo�anent.
Approval of a joint access drive requires a signed letter of
agreement between both owners su�iitted with the site plan.

: (c) Comnercial/Industrial Ilriveways, One-Way Operation:
i. Ninety degree (90° ) drives shall have a width of
twenty-tw� feet (22') for ingress and twenty feet (20') for �
egress, with the separation median width being a mini.mt.4n of
eight feet (8') and a maxiirnun of ten feet (10' ) . (Fig. 20.4)

' ii. Sixty dec�ree (60�) angular drives shall have a width of
twenty feet (20') for ingress and sixteen feet (16') for
egress, with the separation median width being a minim�.�n of
eight feet (8') and a maxim�n of ten feet (10') . (Fig. 20.5)
iii. Joint access ninety degree (9G° ) drives shall have a
: width of twenty-two feet (22') for ingress, twenty feet (20')
for eqress, the separation median width being a minimtmt of
� eight feet (8') and. a maxumnn of ten feet (10') and no less
than ten feet (10') of pavement width on either property.
'I'he full drive width and access pavement to both properties
shall be constructed with the first development. Approval of
a joint access drive requires a signed letter of agreement
between both owners sukinitted with the site plan. (Fig. 20.3)
D. Driveway Radi� Al1 driveways intersecting dedicated streets shall
be built with a circular curb radius connecting the roadway curb to the
design width pavement of the driveway, measured at the property li.ne.
Drive radii shall fall entirely within the subject property so as to begin
at a point on the street which is located within the limits of the
j projection of the propert_y corners perpendicular to the street curb. �*
Driveway radii may e�tend in front of the adjoining propert_y if approved
iby the ad�oining owner in writinq. (Fig. 20.1 & 20.2)

(a) The curb radii for a residential drive shall be a minim�mi of

2. Sixty degree (60°) intersection. (Fig. 20.5)
(a) The curb radii shall be five feet (5') for the outside of the
drive and five feet (5') for the median.
(b) Driveway radii shall always be designed to beccsne tangent to
the street curb line in order that the definition of the location
of the edge of pavement for the thoroughfare may be maintained.
E. Driveway Spacing and Location in Relation to Other Drives: Spacings
and locations in relation to other drives and to intersecting roadways, and
standard details are outlined in Figure 20.1 through 20.7.
1. Drive�nrays shall not be allo�aed to be placed within the functional
��-� boundaries of intersections which include the transition sections of
acceleration and deceleration lanes. (Fig. 20.6)
'� 2. Driveways sha.11 not be within twent�� feet (20') of the conflict
area of T or Y intersections. (Fig. 20.7)
3. All driveways must maintain a mininn�n distance of five feet (5')
from utility poles, fire hydrants, underground manholes or vaults, curb
inlets, etc. (Fig. 20.1 & 20.2)
4. F�iting lots with street frontage that can not meet the minimi�n
spacing standards specified in this section and accampanying figures
will be allowed one minim�un width drive for principal access to be
located so as to present the least possible effect on traffic flaa. In
cases where corner lots can only meet the mininnun driveway spacing
standards on one street, access shall not be permitted on the street
where the mini.m«n•standards are not met.
5. Median Ctiits and Spacing: Only one driveway opening shall be
allowed per median opening on either side of the roadway. Drives not
aligned with median openings shall not be allow�ed within seventy-five
feet (75') of the limits of the median opening. (Fig. 20.6)

F. MISCELI�ANEOUS:

1. Residential A�ccess to Collector and Arterials: Driveways fran
single-family dwellings and duplexes are to be placed on local and
collector strPets and shall not be plac.ed on arterial streets and the
,;._.�
following specific roadways: Park Boulevard, Dove Road, Dove Loop,
Heritage Avenue, Cheek-Sparger Road, Hughes Road, Glade Road, Dooley
Street fro�n Wildwood Street to Bushong, north-south section of Kimball
Road, a proposed four-lane arterial to run north-south fram Dove Road
to Kimball Road parallel to and west of the existing Snakey Lane, or
any other street not yet constructed but shown as a faur-lane or larger
street in the Grapevine Thoroughfare Plan, as amended.
2. Thiclmess: All reinforced concrete driveways opening on City
streets with curb and gutter shall have a mininnan thickness of six
inches (6") within the street rightrof way.
' 3. Culverts: Where culverts are required, the culverts shall be of
Class III, ASTM C-76 reinforced concrete pipe with tongue and groove
joints and shall have a minimum length of three feet (3') beyond
driveway edge for all driveways. Minimum size shall be fifteen inches
(15") inside diameter.
' 4. E��pansion Joints: Expansion joints for reinforced concrete
', driveway aprons shall be plac-ed where the driveway apron joins
sidewalks, concrete curb and gutter, concrete paving and at the
right-of-way line. ��

5. Slope: Reinforced concrete driveway aprons shall slope upward

, toward the property they serve so that the sidewalk grade is m�t or the
' apron rises s� inches (6") in the first five feet (5') behind the curb.
6. Water Meter Boxes: Water meter boxes shall not be placed in
driveways. A fee of one hundred fifty dollars ($150.00) shall be
charged to cover the relocation of ineters and services in order to
camply with this section.
