SUBJECT: APPROVAL OF COMMISSION OF NASH FARM PUBLIC ART PIECE
RECOMMENDATION: City Council Consider the commissioning of an art piece by John Rule for
Nash Farm.
FUNDING SOURCE: Approximately $25,000 will come from the Nash Farm donations and
$15,000 will come from the Grapevine Public Art Fund.
BACKGROUND: Figure: The "Choppin Cotton" project is a life size bronze sculpture,
approximately 6' in height. It will be a depiction of a farmer chopping cotton
in the field. The period of significance is the 1890s-1910 and will reflect
the clothing and build of a farmer from that time period on the Nash Farm.
This public art project was initiated by the Grapevine Heritage Foundation
and the Nash Farm Memorial Fund is providing 62.5% of the funding.The
remaining 37.5% is requested to be funded by the Public Art Program. As
you recall, the public art fund is comprised of lease revenue from
commercial cellular carrier antennas on public property.
The location will be the northwest corner of Nash Farm at Ball and
Homestead Streets. Installation is scheduled for April 2, 2021. The
successful artist from the Requests for Proposal was Mr. John Rule of
Oklahoma.
Artist: John Rule, a fulltime artist for over 40 years, resides in Oklahoma
and is from an agricultural family including cotton farming, cattle, and
horse production. Mr. Rule has created several bronze figures including a
life size bronze of Annie Oakley commissioned by the National Cowboy
and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.
Mr. Rule is committed "to create a piece of art to commemorate the
working farmer and to make the history of Nash Farm come to life."
His proposal includes the following:
1 . The scope of work for this project is to design and create a life size
bronze sculpture, approximately 6' in height, of a farmer chopping cotton in
the field.
2. Period of significance is to be of a farmer from the 1890s-1910.
3. Work is to include design, fabrication and finish work of the staff -
approved figure.
4. Artist is responsible for all costs associated with sculpting, mold making,
patina and final artistry.
5. A Marquette of approximately 24" is to be approved from electronic
photo visuals.
6. Artist to establish with Client a time to make at least one visit to artist
studio prior to mold making for final approval of life-sized clay statue.
7. Artist will provide electronic photograph progress updates to Client
twice a month.
8. Work will additionally include delivery and in ground installation of
approved bronze figure at Nash Farm with no exposed basing.
9. Sculpture is to be located on the northwest corner of Nash Farm at Ball
and Homestead Streets.
Sculpture cost: $37,500 for figure. Additional sculpted cotton plants up to
$2,500.
Funding: $25,000 will come from the Nash Farm donations received as a
memorial to the following individuals:

Judy Daniel - $1,475.00
Louise Doherty - $350.00
Ted Ware - $243.71
Norma McCain - $50.00
J.C. Seals - $15.00
$15,000 will come from the Grapevine Public Art Fund
