604 Sick Leave Buy-Back
Sick Leave Buy-Back (SLBB) is available to full-time employees who are actively at
work in a full-time position throughout the twelve-month period of October 1 to
September 30 and maintain the necessary accrual balances as stated below.
.01 All regular full-time employees on a 40-hour shift schedule and sworn law
enforcement employees on an 80-hour shift schedule with a sick leave accrual
balance of 160 hours as of September 30 each year are eligible to surrender 40 hours
of sick leave for cash payment at their current hourly rate of pay. Acting pay is not
considered in the calculation of Sick Leave Buy Back.
.02 All firefighters on a 24-hour shift schedule who have an accrual balance of 240 hours
as of September 30 each year are eligible to surrender 56 hours of sick leave for
cash payment at their current hourly rate of pay. Acting pay is not considered in the
calculation of Sick Leave Buy Back.
.03 For any employee who changes from a 40-hour to 24-hour shift schedule or vice
versa during the SLBB year, the accrual balance required and amount paid will be
based on the schedule worked for the majority of the year.
.04 All employees have the ability to check their own accruals on the payroll self-
service app and website. Employees who rely on verbal information, or information
provided by someone other than the Payroll Administrator in Fiscal Services, and
then do not have the required number of hours in their accrual bank will not receive
a SLBB check for that year.
Employees can email the Payroll Administrator in order to verify the number of
hours they have in their accrual bank. The Payroll Administrator will respond by
email to provide a record the employee can rely on. Supervisors of employees
who do not have access to City email will send an email to the Payroll Administrator
and provide a printed copy of the Payroll Administrator’s email response to the
employee.
.05 Effective October 1, 2021, employees must be employed on the day the paychecks
are processed in order to receive Sick Leave Buy Back.
