HomeMy WebLinkAbout0701 Employment Termination102 701 Employment Termination Terminations occur within any organization and for a variety of reasons. .01 The most common conditions under which employment is terminated are: (1) resignation - termination initiated by the employee who chooses to leave the organization voluntarily. The employee is expected to provide a signed and dated letter of resignation providing two weeks' notice of last date of employment. The Department Head may waive any portion of this notice; (2) discharge - termination initiated by the employer; a disciplinary hearing must be scheduled for any regular full-time or benefited part-time employee prior to such action. (3) layoff - termination initiated by the employer for non-disciplinary reasons; no hearing is required; (4) medical - termination initiated by either party when medical reasons prevent the employee from completing the assigned tasks; (5) retirement - termination initiated by the employee who has fulfilled the TMRS age and years of service requirements. .02 The immediate supervisor and department will complete the Status Change Form and submit it to Human Resources. .03 Human Resources will provide an exit interview to the separating employee. .04 Employees are responsible for returning all property such as uniforms, phones, keys, identification cards, purchasing cards, laptops, etc. to their supervisor. If City equipment is not returned, a deduction will be made from an exempt or non-exempt employee’s final paycheck for the value of the property. .05 Employee benefits will be affected by termination. (1) All vacation, compensatory time, unused personal holiday and Firefighter holiday, and pro rata longevity will be paid after termination of employment. (2) Accrued sick leave is not compensable upon termination. (3) Continuation of health care coverage is afforded the terminating employee and any spouse or dependents at that individual's expense. (4) Certain insurance coverages are available for conversion at insured's expense. 103 .06 Exempt employees who work less than 40 hours during their first or last week of employment will be paid a proportionate part of their full salary for the time actually worked.
