MEMO TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL
1.
FROM: BRUNO RUMBELOW, CITY MANAGER ~
MEETING DATE: JULY 5, 2011
SUBJECT: APPROVAL OF THE PURCHASE OF A 2011 CHEVROLET
TAHOE FOR THE POLICE DEPARTMENT
RECOMMENDATION:
City Council to consider approval of the purchase of a 2011 Chevrolet Tahoe for use in
the Police Department's Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit from Classic Chevrolet.
The total cost of this purchase is not to exceed $25,246.
FUNDING SOURCE:
Funding for this purchase is currently available in account 217 -48910 -209 -9 Police/
Commercial Vehicle Enforcement/Motor Vehicles.
BACKGROUND:
In the past several years, we have seen a significant increase in commercial motor
vehicle traffic on our roadways. This traffic creates an increase risk to the driving public.
In response to this risk, the Police Department diverted resources to aggressively
enforce traffic laws that relate to commercial vehicles. This was done in the last quarter
of 2010. A patrol SUV was used for this purpose.
The City of Grapevine is able to retain all revenue, from the citations issued, for
reimbursement of up to 110% of all expenses attributed to the enforcement of
commercial vehicle laws. That revenue has now accumulated to the point that we are
able to purchase an SUV to be dedicated for that purpose. This will allow the patrol
SUV to be returned to the patrol fleet for use as originally intended.
Quotes were taken in accordance with city purchasing policy. Formal bids and
advertisements are not required for purchases under $50,000. Three quotes were
received, with Classic Chevrolet submitting the lowest quote that met the specifications.
