SUBJECT: APPROVAL FOR THE PURCHASE OF A SOLAR HOT WATER
HEATER SYSTEM FOR THE WATER TREATMENT AND THE
WASTEWATER TREATMENT DEPARTMENT UNDER AN
ENERGY CONSERVATION BLOCK GRANT
RECOMMENDATION:
City Council to consider approval for the purchase of a Solar Hot Water System for the
Water Treatment and Wastewater Treatment Department from Sunrise Solar Dallas Fort
Worth, Inc. under an Energy Conservation Block grant from the Department of Energy in
the total annual amount of $19,000.
FUNDING SOURCE:
Funds are budgeted in account 113 - 48860- 415 -09 Grant Fund1ARRA Energy
Grant/Machinery and Equipment and 200 - 48860 -534 -0 Utility Enterprise
Fund /Permanent Capital Maintenance /Machinery and Equipment.
BACKGROUND:
Quotes were taken in accordance with City Purchasing Policy. Formal bids and
advertisements are not required for purchases under $50,000. Nine vendors were
contacted to submit quotes. A copy of the quote tabulation listing all pricing received is
attached for review.
The City of Grapevine received an Energy Conservation Block Grant in the amount of
$503,500 from the Department of Energy. One of the projects approved as part of this
grant award in helping reduce electrical consumption is for the installation of Solar Hot
Water Heaters at the Water Treatment and Wastewater Treatment Plants. Solar Water
panels will be installed on the roof of the buildings and new hot water tanks installed in
the buildings.
Of the quotes received, Sunrise Solar submitted the lowest quote that met
specifications. Sunrise Solar Dallas Fort Worth, Inc. has provided this service for other
Cities in the Metroplex with satisfactory results.
Staff recommends approval.
