New Business
1) Robert Singletary mentioned the golf operation are setting records every month that
goes by in revenue and rounds. We are up 7% in rounds and up 12% in revenue for
last year. The heat has not deterred players from playing or using the driving range.
Merchandise revenue is up 56% from last year and we are on track to do $400,000
even with supply chain issues. In the 3rd quarter, we had several small to medium size
outings play GV. Easy to fit these groups in our tee sheet with the off 9. Not much rain
the past couple of months to slow play down. The poa disappeared in mid -May with the
heat and Merlin is going to find a way this fall to eliminate the poa problem we
experienced this year. Persimmon's got the Bunker open in April and is open around 5
days a week. We are in the process of hiring some fall/winter help for outside services
due to the college kids leaving. The city has reduced the minimum age to 16 years old
to work at the golf course. Bob Blalock mentioned that we have hosted a couple of
junior events. We have hosted several NTPGA jr events from 9 holes, 18 holes to 2 day
36 holes. RS had an update on the practice facility improvements from Steve Wolford.
They have met 5 times and have some preliminary plans to add a par 3 course, new
Pecan putting green along with new back tee to Pecan #1, new chipping green and
more range tee. To pay for this project, the golf department has a surplus in yearly
revenue that will go to capital plans/funds. There will be a rate increase the beginning
of 2022/2023 and surpluses of monies will be used for capital projects. Capital money
is not in the golf department's budget for next year. The rate increase is to insure GV is
in the 50t" percentile with other municipalities and certain expenses ae increasing every
year. There will be a city ordinance for the golf department to put the rates at the 50tn
percentile every year if they choice to.
2) Eric Hunt talked about the instruction programs... the junior academy and Get Golf
Ready. Gabe has taken over the junior academy and has taken the summer off due to
the temperatures and families taking vacations. They will start back up in September.
EH's get golf ready classes remain full and his class in September is full and already
booking for October. There is a great need for these classes as so many people are
eager to learn the game of golf.
3) RS talked about a couple of things that pertain to Persimmon's as no one from
Persimmon's attended. Mike Scheel's position was eliminated 1 month ago along with
the chef turning in his 2 week notice. They did $1.5 million in total revenue and has not
made a profit in year 1. The golf course has not received any proceeds from Persimmon's
since it opened last June. We are looking at all options for the restaurant in the future.
4) Merlin Tielkemeier commented about the golf course conditions. They are watering
dry spots that are on the course due to Cowboys transfer pump being down for the past
couple of weeks as we have the share water with Cowboys. The course doesn't look as
bad but needs more water put on it. The pump should be installed this week or next. We
will up our ponds first, then water the course from that water. Other courses are having
challenges with water so we are grateful our course looks the way it does. Fertilizer prices
have gone up which effects MT's bottom line. We thought about overseeding the tee
boxes on the golf course but rye grass has gone from $1 per lb to $3 per lb. MT is having
a hard time getting any kind of equipment due to the supply chain. We are looking at the
cart path issue and will begin the repair process in the fall. The city will help us fix the
worst paths. We are aerifying the greens on Tuesday & Wednesday July 26t" & 27t" The
course will be closed along with the shop and practice facilities. This will give the crew
the entire course to move around without golfers in the way.
