MEMO TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL
FROM: BRUNO RUMBELOW, CITY MANAGER 4"/R.,
MEETING DATE: OCTOBER 6, 2009
SUBJECT: ROADWAY NAME CHANGE — GRAPEVINE MILLS TRAIL
RECOMMENDATION:
City Council consider adopting an Ordinance amending Chapter 20-7, relative to Street
Name Changes, as follows:
Delete:
"Grid Iron Way
The additional entrance into State Highway 26 located approximately 950 linear feet
northeast of Grapevine Mills Boulevard South and extending northwest from the
highway to the East Internal Ring Road is hereby designated and shall hereafter be
known as Grid Iron Way"
Add:
"Grapevine Mills Trail
The additional entrance into State Highway 26 located approximately 950 linear feet
northeast of Grapevine Mills Boulevard South and extending northwest from the
highway to the East Internal Ring Road is hereby designated and shall hereafter be
known as Grapevine Mills Trail"
and take any necessary action.
BACKGROUND:
With the delay in the construction of Phase II of the Dallas District component of the
DFW Connector, the planned braided ramps between Sandy Lake Drive & FM 2499 will
not be constructed in the near term. This limits access to the Grapevine Mills Mall for
southbound SH 121 traffic to the single exit near the Denton Creek bridge that provides
access to Freeport Parkway and Grapevine Mills Boulevard North. This restricted
access was intended as only an interim step until Phase II was completed.
In light of the delay of Phase II, City staff has approached TxDOT about an additional
exit ramp from the southbound SH 121 to the Bass Pro Drive ramp. This additional

ramp will provide direct access to the existing signalized intersection at SH 26 and Grid
Iron Way. With this ramp, TxDOT will erect additional highway signage identifying the
ramp as an exit to Grid Iron Way.
The name Grid Iron Way has significantly less name recognition than the name
Grapevine Mills Trail. By changing the street name, the exit ramp and its associated
highway signage will be readily identifiable to the area motorists.
The Grapevine Mills Staff are supportive of the name change.
Staff recommends approval.
