SUBJECT: APPROVAL TO PURCHASE MOBILE COMPUTERS FOR THE
POLICE DEPARTMENT
RECOMMENDATION:
City Council to consider award of a purchase order to Motorola Inc. for the purchase of
seven mobile computers and associated hardware and software for the Police
Department in the total amount of$41,932.80.
FUNDING SOURCE:
Funds are available in account 117-48860-209-4 Crime Control District Fund/Machinery
Equipment and Implements/Police.
BACKGROUND:
This purchase will be made in accordance with an existing Interlocal Agreement with the
Houston-Galveston Area Council (HGAC) as allowed by Texas Local Government Code,
Section 271.102. Bids were taken by the Council and a contract was awarded to
Motorola, Inc. under contract number RA 01-08 effective from January 1, 2008 to
December 31, 2009. The Interlocal Agreement and Cooperative Purchasing Agreement
satisfy all bidding requirements under the Local Government Code.
This purchase is for seven mobile computers and associated hardware/software for the
seven new patrol cars that will be purchased during this budget year. The equipment will
replace aging mobile computers at the end of their normal life expectancy and will
ensure that officers are using state of the art equipment that increases officer safety and
efficiency.
The Motorola equipment being purchased under the HGAC contract has the brightest
touch screen monitor currently available and is critical for use during the day. This
equipment is also compatible with equipment currently in use at the Police Department.
Staff recommends approval of the purchase of seven mobile computers and associated
hardware/software from Motorola, Inc. in the total amount of$41,932.80.
