HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem 08 - Construction StandardsMEMO TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL
FROM: BRUNO RUMBELOW, CITY MANAGER
MEETING DATE: APRIL 18, 2023
SUBJECT: AMEND A PORTION OF CODE OF ORDINANCES PART II APPENDIX E
— CONSTRUCTION STANDARDS
RECOMMENDATION: Consider an ordinance amending the Grapevine Code of Ordinances Part
II Appendix E — Construction Standards Article III Standard Specifications
For Construction — Water Distribution System and Sanitary Sewer System
deleting in its entirety Item 8, Asbestos -cement pipe and fittings; and Item
12, Vitrified clay pipe sewers.
FUNDING SOURCE: Not Applicable
BACKGROUND: Asbestos cement pipe was widely used in the late 1950s until the early
1970s.
Vitrified clay pipe was some of the most early used sanitary sewer pipe in
the City. It is a good product but brittle and prone to roots and soil
movement. It was used until PVC became recognized as a better product
with longer life and easier installation.
Staff has not allowed these products in our system for many years. In a
review of our Code of Ordinances, we found these materials listed as
options for new development. Staff seeks to strike these from the City's
Code of Ordinances.
Staff recommends approval.
