Site Meeting: Old Post Office Meeting attendees: Carlos Salazar, Builder, Finn Residential; Brad Haile Executive Pastor, First Baptist Church of Grapevine; David Klempin Historic Preservation Officer (HPO); and Kayce Vanderpool Historic Preservation Secretary. Site Meeting at 113 East Texas Street - Old Post Office, at 1 p.m.: David Klempin came out to advise the builder about this Historic Land Marked property. He pointed out the original front windows and bottom panels of the building. Mr. Klempin will research to find photos, and provide the original colors used for the Old Post Office to keep it historically accurate. There was a standard plan for a 1950's U.S. Post Office, this is an original 1953 store front. The bottom panel was a solid panel (not colored glass) with 2 upper panels of clear glass. The awning should be aluminum, Mr. Klempin pointed out that it has been painted. The green canvas awning was approved to be removed and to restore to the flat cantilever that was there originally. Mr. Salazar provided a brick sample for possible match. Mr. Klempin reviewed it and said the color was a good match but the size is longer than the ones on the building and suggested keep looking. The front doors must stay, they are "grand fathered" and the Historic Landmarking provides exemptions to the ADA requirements, and not required to make the doors wider. The back of the building has larger doors to meet ADA requirements. The back of the building where the single door was approved to be widened for a double door and remind the builder to be careful with the original brick. The integrity of the original historic store front is protected by the preservation ordinance. Mr. Klempin made it clear that the front must remain and that he needs the cooperation of the church. Mr. Klempin said that if any changes are needed they must get approval with a new Certificate of Appropriateness.
