The City of Grapevine Parks and Recreation Board convened in
regular meeting at 7:30 P.M., on this the 22nd day of March,
1979, with the following members present to -wit:
Ron Armstrong, Chairman
Tom Walker
Neal Odle
Fred Handy
Jim Swinney
Melvin McGrue
Mike Colburn, Superintendent of Parks
Richard Stasney, Superintendent of Recreation
Kevin Conklin, Director of Parks and Recreation
The meeting was called to order by Ron Armstrong.
The invocation was given by Fred Handy.
The minutes were read, and a motion by Fred Handy was made to
accept them. Neal Odle seconded, and the minutes were approved
unanimously.
Mike Colburn gave the Parks Division report. Several of the
dead oak trees have been removed from the cemetery. During
inclimate weather, the crew has been working on equipment repair
and making shelves and cabinets for the parks shop. Two parking
areas have been established at the soccer area at Oak Grove.
There also has-been a pedestrian bridge installed at the soccer
complex. Four Little League backstops have been installed at
Oak Grove, for practices. Dove School's asphalt pad has been
painted. There has been sod work on Newcastle Drive, and ditch-
ing improvements at Oak Grove. Herbicides have been applied in
major use areas. New park signs are currently being installed.
Richard gave the Recreation Division report. He reported that
volley -ball and pee wee basketball were finished. Participation
in the sports was increased from last year. All adult softball
leagues will be beginning the same week in April. Registration
for girls fast pitch is now being held. The first Men's Open
Tournament will be held May 11, 12, 13. The swimming pool and
summer playground program will open the first week in June.
Under Old Business, the Athletic Facilities Policy was discussed.
It was noted that the Policy had been approved by the Council.
The City Bond Election was discussed by Ron Armstrong. Ron felt
that a workshop should be held with Parks and Recreation Board
Members to discuss the Bond Election.
The Timberline Park Project was also discussed. Kevin noted
that there was a possibility that the City could not receive
federal money to develop the park, unless the park could be leased
by the City on a long-term basis.
Bill Grantland, who owns almost seven acres of floodplain land
near Creekwood Estates, has given a letter of intent to the
City stating he would donate the land. This project will be
considered after further study by the City staff.
There being no further business, Tom Walker made a motion to
adjourn. Jim Swinney seconded, and all present voted aye.
The meeting was adjourned.
