4 The City of Grapevine Parks and Recreation Board convened in
regular meeting at 7: 30 P.M. , on this the 26th day of January,
1971, with the following members present to-wit:
William Shafer
Fred Handy
Thelma Conine
Gennie McAferty
Melvin McGrue
Bob Hart, Director/Parks and Recreation Dept.
Kevin Conklin, Recreation Superintendent
Tom Gupton, Parks Superintendent
The meeting was called to order by Bob Hart.
The invocation was given by Gennie McAferty.
Bob Hart, Director of Parks & Recreation, gave an overall view of
the department's goals and objectives for the near future. The
board was updated on the progress of the joint development agreement
with the City and the Grapevine Independent School District. The
agreement was passed by the City Council at its last meeting, and
goes before the School Board January 30th , If the agreement
passes, the Grapevine Middle School would become the first site of
the Joint Development, involving the building and lighting of tennis
courts, and the construction of a park.
Tom Gupton, Superintendent of Parks, gave the board a report of the
progress of the parks department . Mr. Gupton stated that Heritage
Park would soon have new playground equipment, and that approximately
4 acres of land was being cleared as an addition to the existing
area. A new sprinkler system will be installed this spring at the
park, and the tennis courts will be repainted, as soon as warmer
weather arrives.
Mr. Gupton also reported on the following:
Dove Park Pool - the pool will be repainted, and the pool area
irrigated.
Oak Grove Park - Field #4 has had a new outfield fense installed,
and field #3 has had its fence repaired, field #1 will be graded
and seeded soon.
Pickering Park - the park has had new equipment installed, plans
also call for the addition of a parking lot and water fountain.
Cluck Park - additional trees and shrubs have been added to the park.
The Parks Department also has moved from its old location at the
water tower, to the City shop, located at 700 Shady Brook. The new
location allows the Parks Superintendent to have an office, and
there is also a garage and storage area.
Kevin Conklin, Superintendent of Recreation, reported on the progress
of the Pee Wee Basketball League, which plays on Saturdays at Dove
Elementary School. Mr. Conklin also stated that 6 teams are
participating in the Men' s Basketball League.

Conklin also reported that the 3rd annual Great Grapevine Easter
Egg Hunt will be held at Heritage Park on March 25. Approximately
6,000 eggs have been ordered for the event. Children ages 3 to 11
are invited to participate.
Coo In addition, Mr. Conklin also announced upcoming plans to form
numerous softball leagues. The Leagues will probably involve
junior & senior girls, an industrial league, and two men' s leagues.
There is a possibility that a women's league will be formed this
year, also.
Gladys Skinner, Director of Senior Citizens ' Services for the City
of Grapevine, presented a very informative slide presentation on
Senior Citizens services and activities. The presentation gave
a broad scope of services possible, such as aide and assistance with
welfare, social security, and legal aide. It also explained that
a center such as what Grapevine will have can offer the above
services, as well as arts & crafts, lunches, field trips, classes,
etc. The Board members were impressed with the multi-use plans for
the center.
Mrs. Skinner also announced that the participants of the center
Ar will decide themselves what programs and activities may be offered.
The participants will derive at the activities they wish to have,
and present their ideas to Mrs . Skinner.
There being no further business William Shafer made a motion to
adjourn the meeting. The motion was seconded by Thelma Conine,
and all present voted aye. The meeting was adjourned.
