HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem 02 - Dove Extension Names OA STEM #
MEMO TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL
FROM: ROGER NELSON, CITY MANAGER
MEETING DATE: MAY 16, 2000
SUBJECT: WORKSESSION ITEM — CONSIDER NAMES FOR DOVE
EXTENSION
During the April 18 work session the issue of a name for the Dove Extension was
discussed with Council. The problem with continuing the name Dove from the current
intersection of Dove and Dove Loop is the creation of conflicts within our public safety
dispatching system. It was the consensus of the Council that a set of historical names
be provided for consideration for the name of the road.
The list of significant individuals in Grapevine's is a long one. In addition to input from
City staff, I also discussed the individual names with the Mayor, Ted Willhoite, Ed
Langley and Joe Wright. The use of individual names raised the concern among the
people I talked to that all of the individuals are fine people and choosing among just one
of the names could result in hard feelings among these founders' descendents. Another
concern expressed is that choosing from among these names would be forcing a choice
from among equals.
The list of individual names is:
Millican Buckner
Conine Hemley
Wallis Baker
Dorris Gano
Langley Yates
Yancey Bass
Coble Parkman
Another option was raised in discussions that we may want to use the historical names
given to the area before development. There are two sets of names for areas. The first
list is for those areas or features that are directly in path of the extension or right in line
with it. The second is for those features that near the extension, but not directly in the
path.
in the path:
Quayle Branch Quayle's Hill

Coble Branch Quayle Farm
(sie, Indian Campground
In the vicinity:
Grapevine Springs Miller School Road
Simmons Dairy
The final suggestion was to retain the Dove Road name for the east/west portion and
rename the Dove Road that runs north/south Dove Loop. This proposal also included
the City paying $200 to the residents for address changes and $500 to the businesses
for their reprinting costs. There are 27 residents on this portion of Dove and four
businesses. The cost of this option would be $7400.
I look forward to discussing these options with Council Tuesday evening.
