BACKGROUND:
The large triangle -shaped traffic island at the intersection of Northwest Highway and
Business 114 has excellent potential for being a focal point for the rapidly developing
northeastern part of Grapevine as well as the entrance to Historic Main Street. Staff at
the Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Parks & Recreation Department have
discussed/planned to landscape this area to increase its attractiveness.
The City contracted with Carter & Burgess to draft a plan of this traffic island and the
plan was presented to the Council Facilities Committee on May 22, 2000. Funds were
approved in the FY 2001 budget for the design of this traffic island. The plan includes a
pond, sculpture, natural -stone retaining wall, walking paths, parking lot and landscaping.
If the contract is approved by the Council, staff intends to submit a Cost Sharing Grant
application to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to landscape the island.
The irrigation of the medians on State Highway 26 North will also be included in the
Cost Sharing Grant application submitted to TxDOT.
