HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem 03 - Soccer Field Lights at Meadowmere ParkMEMO TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL
FROM: ROGER NELSON, CITY MANAGER
MEETING DATE: JUNE 1, 2004
SUBJECT: CONSIDER THE DONATION OF LIGHTS FOR THREE
SOCCER FIELDS AT MEADOWMERE PARK FROM THE
GRAPEVINE/SOUTHLAKE SOCCER ASSOCIATION
ECOMMENDATION:
The Parks & Recreation Advisory Board and staff recommend the City Council approve
the donation of lights for three soccer fields at Meadowmere Park from the
Grapevine/Southlake Soccer Association.
BACKGROUND:
Officials from the Grapevine/Southlake Soccer Association approached staff
approximately two months ago with a request to donate lights for three soccer fields at
Meadowmere Park. Parks & Recreation Department Staff worked with these officials to
put together a schedule for the use of the three soccer fields. The proposed schedule
includes use by the City for programming and rentals, the Grapevine/Southlake Soccer
Association for league and tournament play and by the Eagle Select Soccer Club for
practices and tournaments. The Eagle Soccer Club, an organization for advanced
soccer players, is under the umbrella of the Grapevine/Southlake Soccer Association.
This club offers opportunities for local youth to play at a higher level than recreational
soccer. The use of Meadowmere Park will allow local youth to play at the select level
here rather than going to places like Plano or Allen to play soccer.
A total of $500,000 was approved in the 1998 Bond Election for phase 1 development of
the soccer fields at Meadowmere Park. Because of funding issues, lights were not
included in phase 1. However, staff has had signage at both entrances to the park for
approximately seven years indicating that Meadowmere Park is the site of future lighted
ballfields. Currently, there are 12 lighted baseball/softball fields in Grapevine parks
while there are only two lighted soccer fields.
This item was approved unanimously at the May 20th Parks & Recreation Advisory
Board meeting.
