(._ MEMO TO: HONORABLE
MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL
/*FROM: ROGER NELSON, CITY MANAGER
MEETING DATE: DECEMBER 16, 2003
SUBJECT: WORKSHOP - GRAPEVINE TRAIL SYSTEM
BACKGROUND:
Staff will have a brief Powerpoint presentation of three ongoing trail projects.
Big Bear Creek Trail
Construction will begin in February 2004 on the Big Bear Creek Trail that will link Bear
Creek Park to Parr Park and to Pool Road. This trail will be 10' wide and approximately
1.6 miles long. The City has an agreement with Memorial Baptist Church to construct
the trail on church property. The trail will link with the trail at Parr Park behind Rosecliff
Terrace. Four bridges are included in this trail project. The project came in under
budget and the City has a grant from TxDOT to construct the trail. During construction,
staff is recommending a change order to re-construct a small section of trail behind
Rosecliff Terrace that has been a maintenance issue as the current section silts in
whenever it rains. -
Oak Grove Trail
Design is approximately 80% complete on the Oak Grove Trail that will link the C. Shane
Wilbanks Trail at the Oak Grove Soccer Complex with the Dove Loop East Trail currently
under construction. The trail will be 10' wide and approximately 1 .7 miles long. The trail
will begin at the soccer complex and continue south along the west side of the Oak
Grove Baseball Complex to the park road that goes to Scott's Landing Marina. The trail
will then be constructed in the woods that follow the park road back to Dove Loop East.
Staff anticipates that construction will begin on the trail in the fall of 2004.
Dove Loop Trail
The final trail is the Dove Loop East Trail that is currently under construction with the
new road. This trail will be 8' wide and will link with the trail that that goes through the
Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center on Lake Grapevine. There are two small
sections of the trail that need to be constructed to complete the Dove Loop East Trail.
One link is from Dooley Street to the Silver Lake subdivision and the other is by the
duplexes further east on what was Peach Street. The City has the right-of-way and
funding to construct both of these sections.
L The City of Grapevine is very close to completing the inner-city trail system in
Grapevine. In fact, there is only one major inner-city link that is not funded at this time.

This is the link between Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center on Lake
Grapevine and Grapevine Mills Mall. There are two additional trails on the trail master
plan yet to be completed. One trail will link with the Mills Run Trail north of Grapevine
Mills mall and will connect to future trails in Coppell. The other trail will also link with
future trails in Coppell along the Cottonbelt Railroad tracks. If all trails on the master
plan are constructed, the city will have over 34 miles of hike and bike trails within the city
limits. Hike and bike trails were by far the highest priority to the citizens of Grapevine in
the last two citizen surverys.
