RECOMMENDATION: City Council to approve the submittal of an application for a Technical
Assistance Grant for pipeline safety as part of the US Department of
Transportation Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.
FUNDING SOURCE: There is no funding required at this time.
BACKGROUND: The Technical Assistance Grant (TAG) provides funding to local
communities and groups of individuals for technical assistance related to
pipeline safety. The City is requesting a grant of up to $100,000 to
enhance the Public Works GIS system in order to improve risk
assessment and asset management practices for its fiber, water, and

through the use of GPS (global positioning systems) equipment. There is
no local match required for this grant.
Staff is actively collaborating with the local Texas811 Call Before You Dig
Center, aligning its efforts with other municipalities in the area to promote
regional pipeline safety. All expenditures will strictly adhere to the awarded
grant amount. Council approval will be sought for any necessary contracts
related to the project.
